Japanese Language Study Log: Nella

#1
So hoping this can help put some order to the chaos and be a point of reference.

July 2017 passed N2 110/180
21 29 60

Not the most flash results but I'll take it!

I will need to decide whether I'll retake N2 or go for N1 whenever that will be. Definitely not this December that would definitely be a waste of money.

I need to start studying seriously again starting with kanji. I have barely touched a text book since finishing Genki 2 some 3yrs ago.

I tried RTK but did not last, maybe less than 5 chapters and restarted my anki deck so many times I've lost count. All the SKM books (N3-N1) are collecting dust on my shelf.

I am the opposite of many who start with working on reading and then go to listening and speaking. Listening and speaking is fine no issues there.

The plan is to work on my kanji/vocab/reading/grammar/writing at the same time so
1. I will be working through the kanji kentei levels starting from 10,
2. I will start reading everyday starting with some graded readers, manga etc
3. I will reset my anki deck yet again and this time will start at one item per day that way there is no mountain of reviews if there is a missed day and gradually increase the amount so i can ease back into it
4. Continue watching/listening to whatever fills my fancy Smile

Let's see how long this lasts!

Congrats on passing N2!

Take this with a grain of salt, as I'm just going through Genki myself right now, but I think you'd probably learn more if you aim for N1. I'd imagine that N1 material also includes N2 material that it assumes you know, so you'd get the review of the N2 stuff included along with new material.

Thanks. At the moment I am just trying to build up my reading and kanji muscles so am not specifically looking at the JLPT materials. I might start adding them in down the track Smile

Finished reading Graded Reader Level 0 volume 1

What went well
Reading the Graded Reader has been great. I could probably read the volume in 10minutes but forcing myself to 1 story everyday might help me set up a reading routine so am happy to be taking it nice and slow.
Anki has been a breeze at 1 new card a day, from next week i will move up to 2 Smile
Going through the Step book has been good. There is a little writing practice, vocab and the exercises are fun.

I've been working through the Graded Readers as well. Do you just read one straight through, or is there a specific way you tackle each one?

At the moment I have just been reading straight through. I haven't listened to the audio either. They have all been pretty straight forward to me so far.I am taking an extensive approach so unless something bothers me I'll just move on.

What went well
Continued with the Graded Reader series. From tomorrow will be reading some manga instead to change things up so will see how that goes.
Anki is still good. This week was 2 new cards a day next week I move up to 3.
Still going through the step book. I need to have vocab/kanji readings reinforced so hopefully changing up my reading material will help with variety.

Studied
Finished the 10kyuu book and started the 9kyuu one and currently working through Step 3.

Read
Started reading a manga called What's Micheal 2. No idea what happened to 1. It's got volumes instead of chapters but they are only a couple of pages. I read from vol. 22 to 27. No furigana.

What went well
It has been a super busy and hectic week and still going so am glad to have kept up with it all as much as I have. Starting the 9kyuu kanji book felt like a real level up. I feel this is going to be a good step up as I am familiar with reading the kanji but not writing them. I think the manga might be for high school level and above? It is pretty funny and the short chapters make it manageable. I will try and see how I go this coming week as some things should die down and I may be able to squeeze in more than just one little chapter everyday. I was also able to keep up with anki everyday having few new cards and 2 or 3 review cards helped. This coming week moving to 4 new cards a day. Tadoku month is coming up next month looking forward to keeping up the experimentation with reading Smile

Still reading What's Micheal 2. I read up to vol.35.

What went well
It has been another challenging week but some progress is better than no progress. I am still enjoying working through the 9kyuu book though this week has been super slow. The manga is good I have been picking up a few interesting things as I go. Hoping to finish it this coming week and I might pick up something different for next time. I was also able to keep up with anki. I might have missed a day somewhere when things were all over the place but there was hardly any big pile of reviews waiting so all good. This coming week moving to 5 new cards a day.

What went well
Still trying to stay positive. I am working through the 9kyuu book and this week i finished step 5 and the first 力だめし. Hoping to finish the manga this coming week and I will be sticking to this series for now. It has been a good change. (I still need furigana in my life lol). I was barely able to keep up with anki. I missed a few days but there was hardly any big pile of reviews waiting which I am grateful for. This coming week I will be moving to 6 new cards a day.

So Tadoku started and this has been great as it encourages/reminds me to have variety. I have been randomly reading articles and books on top of the manga and listening to some podcasts. I am trying to go at a pace of finishing one manga volume a week. If this goes well I will keep using it as a benchmark. I had to look for a new podcast player as well when Podcast Republic stopped working. I am now using Podcast Addict and so far so good.

Edit: Also wanted to mention I found that Japan Foundation Sydney Library have their own Tadoku collection graded level 0 (beginner) to 5 (advanced). I haven't gone into too much detail but see below example

I just want to say I am quite pleased that the term Kanjipeen or Kanji Peen is becoming more widely accepted.

I seem to have missed mentioning it before but I will be taking the 9kyuu Kanji Kentei exam on the 28th. So that will be fun Tongue

Read
Finished 日常二, Graded Reader Level 0 Volume 3, Graded Reader Level 1 Volume 1. Currently reading Graded reader Level 1 Volume 2.

What went well
Hopefully coming out of a bad couple of weeks (really trying to be positive). Work was crazy busy, had a post-grad exam, travel for a conference and got sick. It can only get better right? I haven't touched the 9kyuu book at all and I am still trying to see when I can resume.

Decided to get onto the graded readers to get some easy wins in and not completely stop reading and that has been good. I will finish all the level 1 volumes and get back into manga again.

I was only able to keep up with anki. I had been feeling that things are moving too slowly but for now I will be staying on 6 new cards a day. It really helped not facing 500 reviews.

So I sat for the Kanji Kentei 9kyuu. I am not confident I passed. I could not write the simplest of kanji. They would just not come to my brain lol.I was really glad I did not get into a hysterical coughing fit or anything like that as I had barely recovered when I sat the test. After the test I was debating not touching anything Japanese related because all those kanji would just be surrounding me and laughing at me lol but I got over it. What's done is done now waiting for the results. I have decided to take 8kyuu next.

Finished Graded reader Level 1 Volume 2. Currently reading through Volume 3.

What went well
The plan was to take it easy since I've just done the exam. Next chance for me to sit again will be in June. I think I will continue the serious study from December and just play with the app for now.

I will finish the final level 1 volume this week and get back into 日常 again.

Anki is still good. I think my tolerance for it is about 3minutes lol. The longest so far has barely been 2minutes but even then it felt like a long stretch. Hopefully my anki muscle will increase the tolerance and I can add a bit more cards. Will see how it goes.

Have been playing the Kanji Kentei app going through 10kyuu kanji and it just reinforces that i can read them but writing can be tricky. From next month I will get back to using the book as well and I'll be looking for ways to incorporate writing in my everyday life to some extent.

Took the 10kyuu practice test in the app
よみ1: 40/40
ただしいよみ: 10/10
かくすう1: 10/10
かくすう2: 8/10
よみ2: 20/20
かきとり: 18/20
かきとり2: 32/40

正解数:78/85
得点: 138/150

So far with my experience at the lower levels of 漢検 if you know your stuff you will be done in half the allocated time(i.e in 20min or less). If there are any curve balls you've got the rest of the time to stare down the item and hopefully jog up your memory Tongue

Read
Finished Graded reader Level 1 Volume 3. Currently reading through 日常三.

What went well
I have found that as there is no need for me to write at all or type a lot using Japanese in my daily life I easily get out of practice when I am not studying. I am in need of some ideas so that it doesn't feel like a chore.

I am back into 日常 again. I will go through a few more volumes and change it up again at some point.

Anki is still good. I am going to work my way up to adding 10 new cards a day and see how that goes. I wonder what the maximum amount of new cards is a day that also does not get in the way of doing those reviews?
