Oh sorry, I knew that 丁寧 means polite/conscientious but I typed kindly instead, dunno what happened to me there but thanks for the clarification.

I'm subtitling something (for free, I'm not making money), and I'd like a sanity check on what this means:

友人からもらって何となく再生したらDVD.
しかし、そのDVDを再生したがさいご。。。
画面から目がはなせなくなっていたのです。

Just a quick translation, to make sure I'm getting it right, no need for a detailed explanation (unless you'd like to give one, of course).

再生 is read さいせい、btw. (that's the word I don't really know)

友人からもらって何となく再生したDVD. (i guess there's no ら there right?)
A DVD that [he?] got from [his] friend and set playing without much thought.

しかし、そのDVDを再生したがさいご。。。
But once [he] started playing that DVD...

画面から目がはなせなくなっていたのです。
[He] became unable to take [his] eyes off the screen.

再生する is the normal verb for playing videos etc^^

Thank you very much, that helped. And yes, that ra was just a typo.

すり抜ける...お前の本来の右目の力か

Can anyone please translate this sentence.

When a book is described as 新版 ("new edition"), does it mean it's the first edition, the second edition, or some edition ≥2?

Consider, for instance, the following product details section for the textbook 漢字練習ノート 小学1年生 by 下村 昇 and まつい のりこ (偕成社 2011).

Literally,
"Slip through... The true power of your right eye?"

Without context I can't be sure of an accurate interpretation, but probably the speaker is asking either 'Is that the true power of your right eye?' or 'By using the true power of your right eye?'.

新版 means exactly 'new edition' ... usually that's a synonym for 'revised edition' and is probably different from the original edition.
(It can also be used to mean 'a new book that's just been/is just about to be published', but probably only when talking about a publisher's catalog, not when talking about the characteristics of a book.)

That's talking about the meaning of the word in sentences, of course, but I expect it means 'revised edition' in a product description.

need help with translating the following sentences in Death Note manga
いずれ殺す子だ
情が移る様な事があつてわならない
馬鹿は大体それで失敗するんだ

The english translations for the above are different and contradictory in mangafox and mangarock...so I'm really confused..

Mangafox translation: -
She may still be able to kill me....
I must not act in any way that will create tension or put distance between us

Mangareader translation : -
I'll kill her eventually.
I can't develop feelings. That's how most idiots screw up.

Can you please tell me which is the accurate translation? What is Light really saying?? Can you translate it in english properly.. [Image: undecided.png]

Mangafox is wrong. The Mangareader one looks rough  but mostly accurate. The exception to that might be "develop feelings", since it implies romantic attachment. This might just be me but I think 情が移る is not a nice way to talk about your feelings for someone. It  might be used to express reluctant empathy for an animal your forced to take care of, or pity for someone/something of lower status.

That being said though it probably would be a fitting way for an ego maniac like Light to approach romance so I think  it's up to you, or someone who's read the manga recently, to interpret whether he is struggling with romantic attachment or guilt/basic human empathy for someone he is mistreating.

Thanks for your help. Why do you think  情が移る is not a nice way to talk about your feelings for someone? When I looked up its meaning on JapanDict, the results are "to become attached", 'to begin to love'.

Also, can you tell me what あつて is supposed to mean in this sentence?

You've mistranscribed that: it's あってはならない, with a small tsu and a ha pronounced 'wa'. That's from aru + tewanaranai must not/cannot/should not (a bit of jlpt2 grammar).
