多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge

Well, I only ended up at about half of my goal at 263.3 pages. I guess it's that thing where when you have a lot of time you end up wasting it. Though, I wouldn't go so far as to say I wasted it, but I split it between so many different things (and one night of being drunk) that I didn't read as much as I thought I would.
Got some good reading in today and yesterday though (where about 200 pages of that score came from).

How'd everyone else do?

I said I wouldn't join but then I did and read 199 pages. Could have been worse, I guess.

I'm pretty happy with how I did -- I set myself a minimum bar of 50 pages a day every day except Fridays, which I met, and I finished with an average of 87 pages a day. First place was a bit of a bonus -- I was expecting to come second for most of the contest.

Great round, well deserved first place! Pretty happy with my results too. Managed to read more book pages in two weeks time than I did in the last full round. I also noticed that reading became a lot less mentally exhausting. I've always had problems with long reading sessions in Japanese, but now I can read for 3-4 hours without having to give my brain a break.

Alas, work has been brutal as I expected, and I came in below my original goal (250) at 160 pages. Still, better than nothing I guess. Hope to do better next time around.

Sad I missed this, I just got super addicted to some visual novels and would have done pretty well. I'll try to remember to sign up in May.... though I'm on vacation for 2 weeks then!!

Congrats to everyone involved Smile

I had a goal of 200 pages and reached 114. But I was still satisfied. In the January round I had a goal of 200 for a whole month. So I basically had double the pages. Moreover I didn't feel it was a big problem to read the 114 pages. In other words I feel my reading speed has gone up a bit. There is still a some way to go before I reach some of the very impressive numbers that some of the participants can do. But I will keep pushing forward.

Well, it's tadoku signup time again. I'm still working on my full-year goal of 50 pages a day so as to end up with 50 books over the whole year. I've run through the initial enthusiasm phase after setting the goal back in February and have now got into the hard-slog phase (50 pages means about 2 hours a day for me). Had a run of some less-than-50 days due to a combination of holiday and a not-so-easy book, but I'm still on target overall. Hopefully this tadoku round will help me push the average up again...

(I've read 19 books this year so far, which is more than I've managed previously in any full year except 2016, and even then I only read 22.)

Thanks for the reminder and congrats on all that reading. This is one of the rare times when tadoku actually feels like it's come at a convenient time for me so I'm in.

Good luck and may the best learner win!

I kind of wish this had begun this week :-p I managed to tear through 448 pages this week while on vacation. We'll see how well I fare when I get back to the real world. I'm setting a steep (for me) goal of 1500 pages.

On the plus side, I'm fairly stocked up thanks to this trip... (Not shown here is あきらとアキラ by 池井戸潤, which my wife is currently reading, and 素敵な日本人, which I'm currently reading.)

Gosh it seems like forever since the last one, I've been doing so much.

I will be taking part (pretty modest goal I think as I don't have a lot of time). Also I won't be there as Cure Dolly because I have turned my twitter account over to my Japanese persona. There really didn't seem much point keeping it in my English language identity because I never used English on it anyway.

I know that just having started the Official KawaJapa Video Channel I ought to be doing social media in English but I just can't. After doing an English video a week and a few other things, I'm Englished out. The last thing I want is to do social media in the language!

But I will be there!

Will be participating as always. I've come to really like these contests, and they force me to do more reading than usual.

Gonna stick to 1000 pages again, since I didn't get 500 in the half round, but I want to go higher if I can. I also have a secondary goal of 100 pages of 'articles' (because those goals have worked so well for me in the past...) to get a little more familiar with things. I'm going to see if I can't find a good industry press to read.

I'll still be working on 新完全マスター読解 when the round starts; not sure if those passages count or not.

I can't see any reason why they shouldn't.

They are real world examples after all. I guess I'll count them (even better, they're articles of a sort).

Oh, and I think I found my industry press:
http://pps-net.org/column

From what I've seen so far (only one article) it's written with the average person in mind too (they explained a heat related efficiency coefficient...), so I thought some of y'all might find it interesting too.

There was another one, but it wanted me to subscribe to read whole articles... the nerve of them, wanting readers to pay them money! /s

Nice photo -- I always say 'no thanks' to those bookstore covers, though :-)

I also refused when I bought かがみの孤城。I then ended up carrying it around everywhere for two weeks and destroying the beautiful cover. So yeah, it's covers from now on.

Some of the stuff I bought the past couple weeks/months. Not sure if I'll get to read all of it, but I should be getting close. Last round I read ~1400 book pages in just half the time. I'll also be doing some reading in English (not my native language either) for work so I might or might not end up counting that as well.

I've been doing the same challenge as you this year! I've finished 24 books so far but I'm falling a bit behind the past couple weeks because I just finished a huge story.  It's been very motivating for me. I've read more this year than in my whole life actually, and it definitely improved my reading.

As long as you're reading them for the first time they should count like any other article.

Ooh, we've started a Book Porn thread - yay!!

And thanks for the reminder to pick up ビリギャル. I watched the movie on Amazon Prime when I landed and would love to read the book.

Tadoku time is upon us! I wish for once I'd stop my 積ん読 habit and actually read the stacks of books I own. Maybe this round Big Grin

[EDIT] I too have some Book Porn but I will post once I get home from work. Wink

Signed up for the next round! Anyone have any good way to measure page count read on kindle?

I also put my goal at 200 but I think I will be reading a lot more than that considering the VN I am tearing through right now.

Just multiply the percentage read as a decimal and the page count of the book as listed on Amazon.co.jp. So if a book has 334 pages and you read 10% (.10) in a sitting, that's around 33 pages.

I failed to take a nice photo like everyone else but here's my manga tbr:

That's:

全 Akira
全 Lucifer and the biscuit hammer
全 Claymore
全 Tokyo Ghoul (not :re)
1-18 Vinland Saga
1-9 Otomegatari
1 Pluto

I think it should last the month. Tongue

I do need a novel to read though. I'm thinking either something by Murakami whom I've never read, or more by the author I'm currently reading (伊坂 幸太郎), who I really like.

You could try Murakami's latest, 騎士団長殺し. My personal recommendation would be one of his sets of short stories, though, with アフターダーク being my favorite.

Looks like we'll both be reading farmland saga Big Grin

Tokyo Ghoul is a very interesting series to read btw, won't be as easy to read as most of the other ones in that list. I still need to finish it as well.
