There's a demo here I think: http://dl.mediadrive.jp/try/et12_try.exe
Hmm... It's really hardcore Japanese. Almost no katakana. Hehe.
It seems to work really well, and I found the 1-touch OCR, but haven't found a way to have it OCR all the files at once. Or how to save. (Saving might not be possible in the demo... I get a message when I hit the same button.)
It handles furigana as if it's just text on that line, though... I'm guessing there's a setting for that, but I haven't found it yet. I'm probably going to play around with the dropdowns.
It ran in linux from the installer, but not after that... Kind of sad about that. Having to run it on my laptop.
Still, it's probably better than nothing.
I don't even know why I care. I'm perfectly happy just reading the image files. Hoping to not find the patch soon, maybe then it will let me open stuff besides the sample files. Might require 300dpi before opening. In that case, most of the scans I've seen online aren't that high, too bad.

It's odd how the Chinese OCR built into my (former) scanner's software works well, while a >$200 special purpose software package fails completely at what it is intended for. It's also odd how my scanner's software supports Chinese but no other Asian languages.
I think you're doing it wrong. It doesn't fail completely for me. Did you try rebooting and/or unplugging the machine?
