It doesn't take that long at all if you're serious about it and use an SRS to help with reviews, as well as stories people have shared here. You can do 100 characters per day easily with the proper study methods.
Uh, I must a complete idiot. I'm struggling with both motivation and memory to do more than 10 kanji a day. OK, I have adult responsibilities, including a full-time job. But after starting in last August, I'm at frame 800 and really struggling with my approximate 130 reviews/day and 10 kanji additions/day. I will definitely reach 1000 in - say - about a month with my 10 kanji a day rhythm with a day off here and there due to social/professional obligations, but I wonder how I will keep my rhythm so as to finish RTK1.
Would it be a mistake to just stop at 1000 and then start really studying the Japanese language instead of playing this memory game with RTK1 and my SRS?
