As we all (should) know, 1500 is not enough characters for Chinese. Once RTH/RSH 2 comes out, the number will be 3000. But if you look at the lists of characters learned in primary and secondary school in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, you'll see that the real number needed is higher.

China has a list called the 现代汉语常用字表 (Modern Chinese Frequent Use Character Chart) of 3500 characters. These are broken up into two sections, 常用汉字 (Frequently Used Characters - 2500) and 次常用汉字 (Less Frequently Used Characters - 1000).

It's worth noting, however, that literacy in China is lower than in Taiwan and Hong Kong. This is due to many factors, but I wouldn't be surprised if the low number of 漢字 studied in school there contributes to some degree. That's just me theorizing; I don't have anything to back it up with.

Taiwan's Ministry of Education published a list in the '80s called the 常用國字標準字體表 (Chart of Standard Forms of Common National Characters) consisting of 4808 characters. I haven't been able to find it in a useful (I don't feel like compiling it by going through  each of the 214 radicals and copying and pasting it all to make it usable). Thanks to transalpin for his link in FuDaWei's thread, I was looking for that forever.

However, I did run across this list of 5565 characters learned in school in Taiwan. I'm working on putting that in a useable format, but it may take some time.

Apparently, Hong Kong's list of characters to be learned in school (elementary and middle) has 4759 characters.

Another interesting thing is that in the Big5 encoding system, there are 5401 characters considered "common use." Also, in the CCCII encoding system, the common use traditional hanzi section is based on Taiwan's list of 4808 characters.

One thing to keep in mind is that in Taiwan and Hong Kong they will generally use more Classical Chinese in their writing than in Mainland China (better education? politics? different thread?), so that is partially responsible for the higher numbers. But I do think this all suggests pretty strongly that 3000 characters will not be enough if you want to really be fully literate. It may be enough for people who only want to read modern work (and not of a literary nature), but I seriously doubt it will be enough for anyone wanting to really enjoy the language's literature, or especially anyone wanting to study the language academically.

Many people here are familiar with zhongwen.com, and it does contain 4280 characters if I remember correctly. It also is available in book form, and IMO the book is better than the website. I really wish the website was text instead of images. As I mentioned I'm also working on putting the Taiwan list of 4808 characters into a usable format. I'm sure there are other great resources out there too.

Thoughts?

I'm not learning Chinese currently (but plan to in a few years time), but it sounds like a great idea. A usefully formatted list of commonly used characters is always good to have right?

EDIT: Also I found your post interesting from a purely educational standpoint. Its interesting to hear about different educational/character standards across different areas.

OK, I just finished an Anki deck with the characters from the first 8 years of school in Taiwan. That's 3526 characters. The 9th year contains 2042 characters, and I'll post that separately when I can. I'll also post a combined deck with all the characters on it.

It's a shared deck called "Taiwan Grades 1-8."

OK, I've finished the rest of the characters, so now I have posted three decks. One is called "Taiwan Grades 1-8," with 3526 characters (the one I posted before), one is "Taiwan Grade 9," with 2042 characters, and a combined deck called "Taiwan All Grades" with the full 5568 characters. I have a feeling that the characters learned in grade 9 are used more in Classical Chinese than in modern Chinese, and Taiwan does teach a lot more Classical Chinese in school than they do on the mainland. If that is indeed the case, the first deck should be enough to get you to a high level in modern, everyday Chinese (newspapers, books, etc), and the remainder would be necessary for more literary contexts or academic work. In reality, I've seen numbers a high as 11,000 for graduate students of Chinese literature, but that's obviously a very special case.

Hopefully these decks will be of some use!

Alright, so that deck you made, bflatnine, looks really useful, however, I have no idea how to go about studying it.  If you could explain the methods you're using to learn this deck and what your expectations are for the results of completing it I'd be really grateful.

I'm not using the deck. Not yet anyway. I was mainly just posting it because I had some extra time on my hands and thought it would be useful. I'm guessing that once I do start using it, I'll delete all the characters I already know and suspend the rest, and then unsuspend them as I come across them in the real world (thanks to nukemarine for that idea). Otherwise, I may delete all the ones I know and just go straight through the deck, learning the rest. Definition and pinyin in the question, character in the answer. Maybe vice-versa. Who knows?

I'm also open to suggestions if anyone else is using the deck.

Edit: I just noticed that between the 3 decks, I'm already at 115 downloads. Cool!

Even though I'm still not quite sure where you got the Big5 list, I thought it was interesting.  I grabbed the data, put it in a spreadsheet and cross referenced it against the Heisig Trads.  I could probably send you a copy if you'd like.

You can contact me through my "FuXiansheng" account at gmail.

That would be awesome. Email sent.

I honestly don't remember where I found the list. Google gave it to me somehow.

I feel unworthy only knowing RTK1 Kanji...

That list makes Kanji used in Japanese look like a piece of cake.

I do have a set of breakdowns for about 25000 traditional Hanzi; would that be of any use to anyone? Accuracy not guaranteed but could be used as a basis.

I opened a thread some hours ago about create or finding an editable list of the 4280 hanzi of the zhongwen.com site....I have the first 1500 hanzi in a text format, done by me...but I want a complete list...someone have the list, or knows some method to extract the data from the site(that is all images)?

I gave up on that a while ago; too inconsistent for my tastes.  But you may want to contact Khatzumoto, as he (famously) made a deck from ZhongWen.com instead of RTK.

Thx mafried for the tip but Khats doesn't even answer at simple questions...let alone requesting his deck...however i think that I will use bflatnine's deck from now on....I'll separate the meaning with commas though, in column they take too much space:)

I contacted Khatz a couple of months ago about buying a copy of his stories for the Hanzi in Zhongwen, but never received a response.
I'm going through Zhongwen now and making stories for all the characters outside of RTK1+3. I'm making an Anki deck and spread sheet (well, a table in a word document) of all the characters, keywords and stories that I'm learning and would be happy to share it with you when I'm done in a couple of months. Considering that it will only contain the characters that fall outside of RTK1+3, I'm not sure how much help it will be to you. Once I've finished with Zhongwen, I plan to go on and learn all the rest of the characters from the Taiwan school list. I reckon 6, 000 characters or so should just about do me.

It would be nice to keep the same keywords as Heisig R{T,S}H{1,2}.

I was considering it, but seeing as the 2nd book hasn't come out yet it became easier to just make my own keywords. I think RTH uses some keywords that are previously used in RTK anyway, and I'm aiming for all unique keywords.

Thanks for posting this - bflatnine - it's extremely useful.  If I can find a decent electronic dictionary to cross-reference, I might consider this approach I just thought up (FYI, I have already gone through RTK so I am familiar with the Heisig stories and radicals).

1. Find the pronunciation for each character with the correct pitch and assign a keyword to each one to help me understand the meaning.

2. Sort all the Hanzi according to sound.  To me, personally, the hard part in learning Mandarin is getting the pitch/pronunciation right.  That means if I can get the pitch/pronunciation right for one Hanzi in the group, I will be able to pronounce all of them in the group right.  Unlike Kanji with a gazillion readings, this approach will work much better with Hanzi and only one pronunciation.  It is also "cheating a little" because in Mandarin, more often than not, two Hanzi with the same right-hand-side will have the same pronunciation, so there may be many cases of "killing two birds with one stone".

3. I will probably still go from keyword to writing + sound, like in Heisig.

I think picking keywords could be a pain in the ass, but with so much data in electronic form already, it should be less agonizing than attempting this a few years ago.  If I can, I will use the Heisig keywords, but as we all know (at least the ones who have gone through RTK), keywords eventually fall by the wayside anyways, so they really aren't too critical - but they are helpful for helping us become familiar with the Hanzi.

I'll put this here so it will be in the Chinese section of the forum. I'm not sure if people in this section will see it where I've originally posted it.

I'm wanting to do a Harbaugh deck. Partly because I think it would be a great resource for people to have, and partly because I want to have it for myself. I'm planning on moving to Taiwan or China in about a year to study in a non-degree program at a university over there. I've heard that Westerners' biggest problem with the Chinese class is keeping up with their Korean and Japanese classmates (who generally make up most of the foreign students' numbers). I've seen the words "hanzi machines" used, so something tells me I'd better learn a whole bunch of hanzi before I get over there.

Harbaugh's book seems particularly well-suited to me since I'm interested in researching the old forms of the characters (seal scripts, bronzes, oracle bones, etc.) when I start grad school, and Harbaugh organizes his book more or less along the lines of the 說文解字, which is ordered around Small Seal character composition. I figure including the 說文 Small Seal characters in the answer field along side the modern traditional characters (and simplified when they exist) would be useful for me and perhaps interesting for others, and takes little extra time to include (chineseetymology.org makes it easy).

Anyway, here's the thread about it:

http://forum.koohii.com/viewtopic.php?id=5726

If anyone is interested in collaborating with me, please post in that thread. This is a great opportunity to learn 4280 hanzi (traditional or simplified or both) and leave a very useful resource behind to show for it, for other people to use later. You'll get an insight into the traditional etymologies (which usually make for good mnemonics) that Chinese people are familiar with. You'll also learn the Small Seal forms along the way if you want, or at least become familiar with them, so that you can recognize them and be able to translate inscriptions on sculptures and such in museums.

If I do this myself, it will take nearly 6 months to complete at a rate of 25 per day (a rate I probably won't be consistent with). But if I have just two other collaborators and we all work at 25 per day, we can finish in just under two months.

Anyway...let me know! It should be a useful and interesting project!
