This thread has gone haywire, but here's my last comment on the matter:
Perhaps you don't *need* the book, but I believe it helps. Beyond that, however, I think it is important to support the originator of this method, financially. While I may not be able to do so for a while, due to changes in my financial situation, I would also like to make at least a token contribution to this site (and so many others) some day, for the same reason. Heisig and Fabrice have given us some wonderful resources, and they both deserve to be compensated. If we just tear through life taking, taking, taking whatever we can for free, eventually the "open" system will fail, and that would be a shame.
So, for those of you who can afford it, pick up a copy of Heisig's book, and maybe throw a few bucks/quid/yen Fabrice's way too. I hate to sound preachy, but the direction this thread has taken is just a little sad to me. I've unsubscribed from it though, so I can get back to focusing on my studies.
The book is useful, and, even with this site, I still hand-write flashcards, just to help embed them in my memory, which is no longer quite what it used to be.
Happy learning, everyone!
