To Resolve: One thing I am noticing in my Anki "open" menu is that there are about 20 seemingly temporary .anki files that apparently are the last save states for the decks I was using.
There are about 10 for each deck... they have names like "tmp0d2iyf.anki", when they are opened they create a like-named .media file, just like a real deck, and saving WORKS for them, but not for the real decks. Still not quite sure what could have possible gone wrong, or how to fix it.

I now know reinstalling won't work because the problem has something to do with how anki interacts with whatever files or mechanisms control leitner scheduling for the .anki decks.

*Updated: I just created a new deck, and saving works with it. It seems that the two decks which were in use were the only ones to become corrupted somehow.

Not really sure what you mean here.

Have you tried deleting the anki config files?  In Windows XP, this would involve deleting the c:\documents and settings\<your username>\.anki directory.

Are you sure you didn't accidently make the files read-only or put them in a read-only location?

Resolve: No, I checked the program files for Anki and there are no read-only files.

JimmySeal: Also, I tried deleting the documents and settings/user/anki/ directory with the "config" file, but it changed nothing. I put everything back where it was.

I can save the decks fine on my computer. If you right click on the deck in the windows file manager and choose properties, is it set as a read-only or hidden/system file? What if you put the deck in a different directory?

Do you think if I took the nonsense named decks, which appear to be replicas of the properly named decks, but work fine, and deleted all the duplicates and the original, now defunct decks, then renamed the copies as replacements, it would solve the issue?

Do decks have to be in the "samples" folder?

Update: I did the above, and it seems to have solved the problem. However, I am worried now because I have .anki files which seem to exist only within the anki "open" menu, and do not appear in the anki program file. I suspect they may be hidden somehow, but I have no idea. I just hope it works, and stays working.

I think things would be a lot clearer if you determined what the error message is saying. Since it's supposed to be written to a file, I doubt if it's really "mojibake" - you probably just loaded the file in the wrong encoding. Open it with your browser and change the encoding

[EDIT] Never mind, I figured it out -- I didn't have my fields typed EXACTLY as I had named them.

Still, I'd like to know what language you used for formatting the cards so I can learn to do it on my own (I'd like to add onyomy, kunyomi, jukugo, Halpern number, and definitions fields, but have them formatted to look like Heisig's cards).  I mean this:

<table width=150><tr><td align=left>画数%(Stroke count)s</td><td align=right>%(Heisig number)s</td></tr></table>

I'm assuming this is HTML?  Sorry for being so stupid...

Anki is written in python, but that shouldn't be important for most users. If you're having trouble with the question/answer formats, make sure your your fields are correctly capitilized.

That markup code is HTML. There's lots of information about HTML on the web, but note that Anki can't display some of the more advanced HTML markup codes at the moment.

Resolve, now that we can make a spreadsheet that has a Leitner box and a last reviewed date, is there a way to "import" our work from RevTK into Anki?

The feels like a stupid question to ask, but - how exactly do I start using Anki to review RTK1?  Is there a way to import a set of flashcards?  If not, would some kind soul be willing to send me a premade deck?

Resolve : this thread is already 40 pages long of pretty much software support, can you set up a simple forum or mailing list to handle support for Anki somewhere?

I'd like to see more practical and useful discussion here about the program as a learning resource/tool : how you use it, what you like about it, etc.

To discuss Anki as a Japanese Learning resource / tool (eg. what you like about it, how it helps you, etc.) on this forum, please create a new thread (same topic, different thread).

I will close this topic because I don't think people are going to skim through 40 pages to  find practical discussion on the program, I think it's better to start anew in a different thread.
