I'm using SRS to work on my Spanish as well, but it looks like we have slightly different goals.  I tend to make cards for things I have heard said, like today someone asked me,
¿Por dónde lo encienda?  so I might make a card with, "Where do you turn it on?" on one side and, "¿Por dónde lo encienda?" on the other.   I am focusing on the way people actually say things in Spanish or things I want to say, rather than grammar and vocabulary.  One of my cards is:
Before you were born
Antes de que tu nacieras

I found it pretty interesting. Especially how they show sentences in Japanese-Spanish -Japanese pronunciation. Example sentence I found in the site below:


日本語: サインお願いします。！！

スペイン語: ¡Autógrafo,por favor!

スペイン語での発音: アウトグラフォ・ポル・ファボル！！

I'm curious as to why you guys decided to learn Spanish laddering from Japanese.  I'm also learning Spanish.  I already know English, French, and Japanese (in that order), and I chose to ladder Spanish from French since the two languages are so linguistically similar.  If I didn't know French, I would have learned Spanish in English because those two languages are far more related than Japanese and Spanish.

For example, the Spanish verb "terminar" automatically brings to my mind the French verb "terminer."  For an English speaker, it only takes a slightly longer mental pathway to go from "terminar" to "terminate" (and then to "finish").  But to get from "terminar" to 終わる?  That just seems like unnecessary work.

I guess it might make sense to ladder from Japanese if you're really intent on maintaining your Japanese skills while you're learning Spanish, but I'd have trouble believing that this is anything but a hindrance if your goal is to learn Spanish as quickly and effectively as possible.  Especially because one of the fastest ways to gain intermediate proficiency in a romance language is to learn a set of transformation rules that allows you to go from one language to the other (e.g. "-tion" in English becomes "-ción" in Spanish).

Anyway, just my thoughts.

Edit: I didn't even mention resources.  I'm sure there are a lot more Spanish resources for the English speaker than there are for the Japanese native.  Plus, resources for English speakers will take into account that it's not hard for the learner to get from "introduction" to "introducción," whereas I'd imagine that a Spanish program for Japanese learners would spend a relatively lengthy amount of time on stuff like the roman alphabet.

Totally valid points tyler. For me, it is about strengthening/maintaining my Japanese at the same time as I can reach another goal. I realize that English -> Spanish is far easier (and just because I'm learning in Japanese, doesn't mean I can't take advantage of my English knowledge) but I think it will be worth it. A bit of　一石二鳥 if you will.

This might turn out terribly, especially since I'm considering Chinese as a 4th language once I get Spanish down. Spanish -> Chinese would be next...

edit: I'd also heard that learning a 3rd language can "replace" your 2nd language if you don't use it. I know learning Japanese replaced a lot of the knowledge I had in other languages, so I didn't want that to happen to my Japanese with Spanish. What has been your experience?
