Hi,
I'm looking for some Japanese music to listen to but all I can find is Jpop and girl bands. ACK!  Any good punk/alt bands out there?  NOFX, MXPX, the Ataris, Dance Hall Crashers, etc.  Even Japanese Ska bands would be great.

Thanks,
JCJC

Don't know anything about the bands listed here:

At a casusual glance however, and I am not an expert in this matter, none of them appear to be J-pop.  : )

If you find a band you like please enlighten us.

Me, I'm off to the opera this afternoon: The local cinema is screening a documentary about the Götterdämmerung, this being the culturati''s equivalent of death-metal.

明和電気!

Not punk. Definitely alt, but not quite the alt perhaps the OP was looking for.

I like their engineer shtick and also the fact they build robots to play their songs for them. Conceptually interesting. A whole concert however would probably be pure torture.

Hmm, I'll add a few:

Ellegarden (Most of their songs are in English, but there are a few in Japanese):

Aural Vampire:

ONE OK ROCK:

Oh, and I second using Last.fm to find new bands similar to the ones you like.
It's introduced me to a lot of groups I love, which I never would have heard of otherwise.
They even have a Japanese version (lastfm.jp). ^-^

Absolutely unrelated to the topic, but since we are talking about music: does anyone know bands/groups making music like ChouChou/OrcaOrca? I discovered them recently and I'm just blown away o_o This is an example: http://youtu.be/UfrMELcvi8k

Not sure if these are along the lines you're looking for, but worth giving it a shot.

0.8秒と衝撃 is great.  They're weird, noisy, and a lot of fun.

Since people are suggesting Japanese bands, does anyone have any good recommendations for heavy metal? What about something like power metal or melodic death metal?
