What are some places / agencies that I can look at / contact concerning such things as language / cultural exchange programs in Japan? I am thinking about something like experiencing living together with a Japanese family, work in exchange of the cultural experience, and that sort of thing.

I am already here in Japan but I am working so I could only temporarily relocate during my extended (2 week or 3 week) holidays a few times throughout the year. In any case, I am just looking to learn what's available out there and see if I can make it fit my current situation.

Any help about how to look for this would be useful as well…

I did it six years ago. It was a great experience. You have to work 6 hours a day (1 day off per week), you stay with a family and get plenty of occasions to speak Japanese. If you don't mind rather hard work (for only six hours, though; the family you live with will spend far more hours working...) and living in a rural environment, I can really recommend it.

I'm wwoofing in Japan at the moment, up in Hokkaido at a horse farm. The people I'm staying with are super nice and the work isn't hard. They only talk a little English so most of the communication is in Japanese. It's in the middle of no-where really though, so there's not much to do in your free time except explore the mountains and do things like study Japanese. Occasionally if there are no customers and the hosts aren't too busy you get to ride horses. smile

I recommend it.
