I just finished the shared anki deck "Core 2000 Japanese Vocabulary". I want to continue on to core 6000, but I can't tell which deck to use. Specifically, I'm wondering if the first three Core 2k/6k decks cover core 2000, and the last 4 decks cover 2001-6000. If this is not the case, I'm open to suggestions.

Yup, that's how it is. I'm using those decks, they're good if you just tweak the layout to your liking.

Thank you kindly.

Ok - I just opened the Core 2k/6k Intermediate 1 deck, and the questions are kana only. I am only interested in kanji questions. Do I have the wrong deck, or am I supposed to do something to it in order to make it useful?

change the layout, the cards should include the sentences/words in kanji/kana/furigana (or you have the wrong deck)

I tried that, but failed. There are 3 templates - reading, dictation and closed. All of the facts are under the dictation template. I couldn't figure out how to get facts under the reading template. I browsed and highlighted all the facts, went to "change model" but the changes wouldn't take place. Is there an "apply" button at the bottom of that window? My mac cuts off the bottom, so I can't access it if there is.

Ok, I found the generate cards action. So I generated all the reading cards, and deleted the dictation cards. Everything looks great when I browse. But now when I do reviews, everything is kana. I'm lost.

You don't need to generate any new cards (unless you want different cards for just words and just sentences, or something like that). Just edit the layout of the dictation template where all the current cards are (or edit whatever template they are atm, you can always redownload the deck if you need to).

To edit the layout:
Go to Settings -> Deck
Pick the correct model (most likely Core2k_6k), click edit
Select the template your cards are in (dictation?), click "Card layout"
edit layouts, ??, profit

I'm using something like this: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15357652/core_layout.png

<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 30px; color: #000000; white-space: pre-wrap;">{{{Reading}}}

{{{Sentence - English}}}
{{{Sentence - Audio}}}
{{{Vocabulary - Kanji}}} -- {{{Vocabulary - English}}}
{{Vocabulary - POS}}

</span>

Furigana doesn't work unless the model of your cards is "Japanese".
If you want to do this, create new model (Settings -> Deck) and add approppriate fields to it (card layout -> fields).
Then go to browser (Ctrl+f), pick the cards you want to switch (ctrl+a), then actions -> switch model, and make sure all the fields are changed correctly.
(some names might be off since I'm not using english anki, but you'll probably get the idea)
If there's an easier way for the furigana fix, I don't know it.

If you need more info / help with anki, you should probably head to their google groups instead of these forums.

As I mentioned earlier, that doesn't work.

Both methods, modifying the card layout and creating new cards, gives correct results when I browse all the cards. The problem is when I go to do my reviews, all questions and answers somehow convert to kana.

I had the same weird error the other day... in a very isolated instance.

In my Japanese model deck, I had tried to copy the usual furigana forumula into my "expression" field (ex.: 今日[きょう]は 元気[げんき]です。) and the result was all hiragana.

I then took out the formatting and entered it again normally (ex.:今日は元気です) and it looked fine. weird.

other than not putting furigana formatting in the expression field of your japanese model deck, I don't know what to tell you. perhaps you should take it up with the programmer Damien Elmes on his Anki support google group. He is pretty good about answering questions...

I don't have furigana turned on, to my knowledge. Both question and answer get converted to kana. I'll ask Damien.

Ok, I asked about this in another thread. Apparently there used to be 7 decks for "Core 2k/6k". Now there is only one. So if I want to get 3001-6000, do I need to pull in the full Core 2k/6k deck and delete the first 3000 cards? I'm not very good at Anki 2 - can someone suggest the best way to do this? I'm only interested in the Japanese sentence/kana & english cards.

I'd figure you just need to hold the shift button on the first card then click on the card you're up to down the list in the Browser (then delete, leaving 3001-6000). Hope this helps/works.

Haha. I'm paranoid because I've done this with other decks in Anki2 and ended up deleting a lot more than I intended, from the deck I was working on and other decks too. But I'll give it a try. Do you happen to know if the cards are in the same order as they were back when there were 7 parts?

Returning to the original question of which deck to choose after completing Core 2K, here are the relevant Anki decks currently found at the top of the list on Ankiweb (https://ankiweb.net/shared/decks/japanese):

Japanese corePLUS        20665    25700    31516    0
(…)
Core 2000 and 6000 Vocabulary and Sentences        8320    5998    5997    0
(…)
Core 2k/6k Optimized Japanese Vocabulary        6223    5999    11916    1946

Then come a lot of:
Japanese Core 6000 Step nn (Listening Sentence & Vocab)
decks.

Can someone explain how the differ from one another. Does one of them supersede others, or are they intended for different purposes?

Thanks
