Just philosophizing here big_smile
Though I'd make a thread to hear your opinions and have a chit-chat.

What do you do when things in your life don't move on?
What helps you to move things forward, when you don't know what you should do exactly to move things forward?

A new goal, however stupid it may be.

A book is translated with my gf is getting published which is taking ages - in the gap i am studying Japanese grammar and learning chess as well as practising typing.

I am also volunteering for a charity and making decisions about the rest of my life.

Take up a hobby that gets you out of the apartment/house weekly (salsa dancing?), move somewhere, or change jobs.

If you don't change your situation you're not likely to make any big changes in your life.

True.

But then again, if you change your situation too much, your inner world might collapse.

Doing a Getting Things Done (GTD) style mental sweep is good. Even if you're not doing the rest of the GTD stuff. It's just good to write down everything you want to do and then work out the actual next step to accomplishing those things.

That's the whole point...

What I am talking about is how to find your next step when you can not/are not able to find it. (when you are lost).

experimenting with a big load of caffeine and having a temporary strong concentration, focusing on stuff and analyzing things is often not something that brings new answers to situations.

just decide what you want to do and do it - what do you enjoy doing?

If you know what your goal is, write out all the steps involved in reaching it. Go down the list and put a tick mark next to each step that -could- be done without doing one of the other steps first. Draw arrows or go through make another set of tick marks (or #2's) for things that depend only on the first set, repeat until everything has a priority. Rewrite the list in the now identified dependency order. Start doing the things that don't depend on anything else. If one of your first-steps can't be done then write down the reason that it can't be done, then rewrite that reason as a task, and renumber your steps. Repeat until you have something you can do.

In practice, I've never completed this process. I get a half-organized list and then start doing something, once my thoughts are in sufficient order to have identified something that can be done. This may be less effective than actually completing the process - my father is much more successful in life and always completely writes out his detailed lists, and  the 'organize yourself' type books say to finish writing the lists first, -then- do stuff.

If the above sounds unreasonable, then I can only presume that you don't have a clear goal... deciding what you want your goal to be is, of course, an utterly different process. I recommend long walks in the woods, without any electronic devices, alternated with taking in the arts that you enjoy - whether that's the museum of fine art or a rock and roll concert. Or perhaps take in arts that you don't know if you enjoy - that might shake things up more.

The main thing is,
what about the next steps that are involved in achieving your goal but you are not yet knowledgeable of?

How to find those steps when you know that there has to be something more than what you already know?

If you know what you want to achieve but dont know how to do it I think it's good to just take a step (ie do something/anything) without worrying too much if it's the right thing to do. If its the wrong step then learn from it and move on. You can only make decisions to the best of your ability.

(maybe I'm missing the point but this is all pretty vague wink)

Go back to my explanation and try again.

If one of your first-steps can't be done then write down the reason that it can't be done, then rewrite that reason as a task, and renumber your steps.

"Don't know what next step is."
Rewrite: "Next step, Research."
"Don't know how to research."
Rewrite: Ask librarian for help.

I mean, unless it's something that nobody in the world has ever done before, the information is out there on how to do it, or at least how other people have done it. (Ambitious goals like 'become movie star' are not always achievable no matter how well you plan, and others like 'find wonderful relationship' have -many- routes, but as a general rule the plan for chancy things is... create more chances for it to happen.)

I totally agree, and add: to constantly seek advice from experienced people in what you want to reach.

I hope you "know what you want to achieve but dont know how to do it", because I changed what I want multiple times, and things stay in control even if I didn't know the steps, but now, after 2 years of flipping between different mindsets and goals (and a total of 6 years of thinking), I totally don't know what I want to do! What makes it even harder is the fact that I have a huge amount of interests and 'clues' and the fact that I tried moving along different paths and sticking to none. Lol, I even don't want to do what I'm really good at! (maybe I must make a topic about that)

To not fall into depression I currently look at life as a journey I'm going through, and in the meantime I'm discovering who I am and the world, even though there isn't much time for that (you know to stick into a career and stabilize my life)!

I hope that helped...

Edit: I've been thinking about seeking advice here, and your thread gave me the final push. I will soon.

Identify whether you're subconsiously being held back by fear of what other people might think or how they might react or fear of doing something non-standard. If you are, learn to switch off that part of your mind that cares. Basically learn to stop giving a f*ck. that is so powerful. Stop wasting time trying to rationalize your actions and reconcile them with how other people think. Stop being dependant on permission, backing or understanding from other people, and start trusting your instincts.

And for those who already got over those things and are still stuck?

@undead_saif I would suggest getting a good teacher. They can be so useful when something doesn't "click". A bad teacher can mess things up. I would also suggest trying as many different approaches as possible - when I wanted a job I didn't stop after one CV didn't work!

I have been in this boat when I couldn't translate patents and I got one "almost perfect" and got to a trial stage of an IP company. I used many different approaches and eventually succeeded.

What is your specific situation or is it just a hypothetical situation?
