Ok so im nearly at the end of heisig RTK1 and i was thinking what if i was to group the kanji i know together into readings? I mean now i know the meanings of the kanji and how to write them i could group all the ones with similar readings into Anki and then just memorise them as a group with same sounds but different meanings?? Surely this will speed up learning the kanji? Is this something i've just made up? Do you think it would work?

Everyone here seems to say that learning readings while you learn new vocabulary works well, so it must work, I guess. But for myself, I learnt a bit of Japanese and then tried to get up to speed on reading ( after completing RTK) by going through the Kanji Odyssey book and I found it quite hard - I kept forgetting things. I quit for a bit and started systematically learning On readings through a method akin to the movie method or kanji chains, then went back to Kanji Odyssey and was much happier with my progress. I'm sure it depends on so many things – what stage you are at in different skills, how much focus you have on different skills ie reading vs speaking, actually learning correct spelling vs just reading, how much time you are prepared to put into reading, and particularly ( for me) whether you feel more comfortable systematizing things and looking for short-cuts - as in RTK, as in movie method/kanji chains, or just diving in...
In hindsight, I think I would have been better off either doing movie method/kanjichains as soon as possible, or probably even better, integrating the readings into my RTK stories - after all it would be only one more element for each story. The big down-side there though, is that going down a path less trodden, I would have had to make up more of my own stories, and I did find copying such a time-saver.
Anyway here are some interesting links to look at, think about, play with the ideas – hopefully without falling into the trap of wasting too much time working out the ideal study method as opposed to actually studying.
