I've just skimmed this and I'm going to simply offer two possible explanations to why the **** this situation may have arrived (non-IT dude in IT office).

The first is that there may be some corporate politics going into play here. You said he was kind of high up, or he's someone mid-level in the coprorate hierarchy. Him not being a people person could mean that he rubbed a few people wrong in the corporate structure up top and they are trying to get rid of him or make his life hell. By throwing him someone that knows nothing on IT and the higher ups telling him "deal with this on your own" in addition to his current stressed out situation. You may simply be a means to an end to get rid of him...unfortunately.

Second possible explanation. Its Japan. Bureaucracy and proper working  (logical) systems in this country are kind of anathema. Some incompetent fool in HR probably just though "oh IT, that's easy, just throw him there since he can't break anything in it."

It's probably Sony recruiting after their recent security breach big_smile

The suggestion for slowly learning this stuff and not being overwhelmed is a good one. If you try to jump into networking, your head will spin. If you start learning how to really use an OS (which sounds like where you might want to be), and then learn some Excel and other basic things - then when you read a book on database programming, it will make more sense than if you try to jump into it headfirst.

For simple English tutorials of programs (OS, Excel, etc) you might want to try Lynda.com. Actually, does anyone know if there's an equivalent to Lynda.com in Japanese? I'd actually be interested in a well organized tutorial site that was in Japanese - I know Adobe has a few podcasts for their programs, but I'd love to find something more extensive than that.

I work for a maker, actually smile
Our focus isn`t on IT.

I promise our higher ups actually like my direct boss. They just seem to not like the fact that he doesn`t speak English, nor do any of them. That`s why they need me I think.

And after a meeting with our group leader, I heard that they used to have a guy who was pretty good at English up and leave to Australia. They apprntly relied on this guy for quite a few things, (including reading IBM manuals in English.  not sure why. I`m sure IBM has stuff in Japanese. I`m simply quoting what our manager said to me. He says right now they assemble things by looking at the pictures. )

But, that`s neither here nor there.

As for getting a new job-----

in this economy? Everyone I know is interning or babysitting or working 3 baitos and then some. I`ll keep my company housing, bonuses and full-time salary thanks smile

Oh, and I should add- He is patient and nice to the oldies up top with their excel problems. I work for a small-ish company and they rely a lot on him, so I do not think he has rubbed anyone the wrong way. If anything, he is too too serious and too too too polite. Our manager even laughed about it with me the other day (ackward for me because it`s not like I can directly criticize him, but it was semi-reassuring to know that others feel he is like this too).

But, of course, I am his kouhai and he has no need to be polite or nice with me.
And that`s why he is the way he is.
