I am finished with RTK Volume 1... Took me four months, but it's OVER! Now onto sentence mining smile

Thank you so much for setting this site up, there is no way I could've done this without the help of all the great people who've contributed to the stories. So thank you for creating a place where we can all come together and share.

Finally finished it a couple of days ago. I took so many breaks from it. Kanji belongs to me now. It's no longer an alien that I may fear.

Hey guys.  First post here, and I'm posting to say that I just finished RTK1 big_smile

I began on 8/13/08, so it took me 5 months to the day.  I kinda took it slow, learning 20-25 new kanji per day most of the time (except a few days here and there where I was lazy).

As you all know, it was a lot of work, but I'm absolutely thrilled to be finished.  When I was getting started, I quickly saw merit in the system, and kinda got an impression of "I think I could do this".  Although, I almost expected to hit a wall at some point, where it'd get ridiculously hard to continue, and I'd give up.  But it never happened.  There were a couple times were it got rather difficult (like when I had a huge backlog of review cards to get through on Anki, and I was forgetting way too many of them), but I pushed on, and things got easier again.

Big thanks to all who've contributed stories.  I couldn't have done it without you smile

And actually, I also am planning on doing a lot of sentence mining from Totoro.  I found a japanese script, but it's really lite on kanji.  If anyone has a better one, I'd love to hear from you.

Finished. Phase 1 of AJATT done, kana is already done, I'm already in sentence big_smile

I actually went 50 kanji per day the first month, which boosted me to 1000 kanji really fast. Then exams and assignments from school just killed all time I had XP. I was going as slow as 10 kanji per day in average for the next 2 and a half month (sometimes 5 per day), and almost never finished my reviews (anki). I finished 4 hours before new year big_smile

I decided to add new kanji from RTK3 when I encounter them only. So far I have an average of 1 new kanji per 30 sentences XP (@75 currently)

I contributed some of my best stories to this site and some of them got starred tongue

I have learned at the end of my RTK journey that not finishing my reviews isn't a bad thing. In fact, it is encouraged, if there's too much to do for the day, to not burn yourself up reviewing everything. Something that everyone who still haven't finished should learn carefully. And something I should've done earlier T_T.

Well then, I still use this site for RTK3 stories, but this is my first and last post here. See you guys!

You guys rock, finishing so fast. You've inspired me to change my methods so I can speed up, since it looks like it'll be a year, total, for me to completion. Congratulations!

Finished! I started I believe in November and just finished today. It feels so nice to finally have them all behind me, and I've already started on RTK3. Although I'm gonna go a bit slower with that one, so I have enough time to firmly implant the first ones in my head smile

Next time I post on this thread, it'll be when I have 2042 in stack 4

Ok, I don't have everything in stack 4 yet, but after a month of reviews I've got 1880+ in there. As my pass rate during reviews is consistently around 90%, I reckon this means all the cards I have in stacks 1 to 3 are now just the natural turnover from reviews. This means I've reviewed everything at least 4 times over the course of at least a month.

Keep up with the reviews after you finish guys!

As an aside, a "leaders" board would be awesome on this site, detailing the people who've had the highest number of cards in box 4 for the most review days.

Having spent the vast majority of my sober time over the last 7 weeks religiously grinding out the RtK, I am, thank God, finally finished (well no more new kanji from Heisig anyway).

The first 500 or so were fun, I was still in the early stages of the romance and young love is always blind. At 600 or 700 I abandoned most of the far too expensive daily Japanese lessons, for which I am unfortunately still paying, in favour of an increased Heisig schedule of about 50 new kanji per day, except for those days where I was too hungover to do anything but sleep and eat Macdonald's. Christmas, my birthday and new year came and went and I hardly noticed, but for the massive review piles that were the natural consequence of my alcoholic negligence over this period. At about 1000 with the new year upon me I moved up to 70 kanji per day, with the qualifications about time off due to liver abuse, progress was rapid, but brutal. I think 70 is about my hard limit, but I've been making up all of my own stories and this requires a fair amount of imagination. By 1500 I felt like, as chess players say; "the rest was simply a matter of technique." And although this was true, it did become harder to cram the characters into my head; a lot of this had to do with the backlog I had created due to the sprint between 1000 - 1500 yeilding confusion between many similar words. The final 500 have been a bit more relaxed and probably took me ten days. I imagine that a month from now, when the reviews reach a managable 30 or so per day I will have really solidified my knowlegde of them, now they feel somewhat ephemeral, but with me.

I would say that finishing this book is probably one the things I really proud of. It's a hard book, more from the point of self discipline than actual content.

Anyway, big props to everyone else who has got through it, and also to everyone still working through it. I have extra respect for the people who have got a long way through, then abandoned it and restarted later; not sure I would have had the will to retackle the monster!

Thanks to the community on this website, I've really enjoyed reading the forum and the stories as I've been working through RtK, its nice to get other peoples opinions and see other people struggling and succeeding. And a special thanks to ファブリス for putting this site together and running it so well; there is a copy of the Aphex Twins on it's way to you.

Starting tomorrow I'm going to be grinding out minna no nihongo I & II and the Japan Times basic Japanese grammar dictionary. I've already done a fair bit of the first book of mnn so I'd like to be done with them by the end of Feb. From there who knows... I suppose I will have a better idea after I get my Japanese bearings.

Just one thing that I've learned from RtK: 哺乳動物 (note 哺 = suckle or to feed). And it turns out to be true http://www.nhm.org/mammals/page006.html. Since 哺 is a very rare kanji then it can be ommitted, so 乳動物 = ほにゅうどうぶつ, also, but that is a non standard pronunciation of 乳.

Just finished adding my last Kanji this morning, what a great feeling.

I'd like to thank the great primitives I came across on this site, was good for making some memorable stories to some otherwise boring groups!!

I did about 400 kanji over a long weekend and didn't take much in the way of breaks.

Now to keep on the reviews, and decide what book is next for me to destroy ^^

Just under a year (by about three days) since I started RTK with this site, and I've finished! (My personal 'winning post' definition was to get all the cards into the system and kill the 'failed' stack and have a day when I didn't make any errors in the daily review.)

I didn't think it was going to take this long, but real life intervened in the middle of last year, so by the time I got back to RTK I had a huge and demoralising pile of expired cards, which turned into a not-so-huge but still pretty demoralising 400-card high failed stack. Still, when I realised I could finish by the one-year 'deadline' I put in a final effort...

I had a go at RTK on my own years back but got stuck at the 500-600 mark; I'd never have completed it without this website.

Congrats pm, I'm on the 1-year plan, too it looks like. I thought I could sprint the end, but fails and study started WAY piling up on me. So I'll probably miss the year mark. But I'll finish.

I just managed to finish RTK1 as well. Started in May 2008 using the German version ("Die Kanji lernen und behalten") by Robert Rauther, who did an excellent job. I have been using Anki for the actual work, which has proven to be an insanely useful program that I am going to use for the course of my further studies. With the notable exception of the last week, I didn't exactly blitz my way through RTK1. Not if you have a job to do and a SO who would like to have some attention now and then. wink

Not sure if I'm going to start RTK2&3 yet. There is a German version of RTK2 sitting on my desk. Unfortunately, there is no German RTK3, which is why I have the English version. But I have to admit that I am not sure at all if I should continue with systematic kanji studies or pick them up on the way. My only regret is that I haven't discovered RTK earlier.

I would like to thank you guys for the excellent story ideas that were very helpful. ファブリス, thanks for this site!

Congratulations, personally i would pick them up along the way as with the ones from the first book you have a solid foundation to build on and techniques to learn the rest as and when you see them.

4 months ish .... I've just finished plugging in the last Kanji from RTK I into my SRS! Now it's time to review like a madman and actually get the kanji learnt/memorised!

I can truly say that without this site, and the members that make it such a good resource, I would not have completed the book. I am incredibly grateful to ファブリス for the site and everyone who left a story behind on their journey through the mother!

For those people that are still struggling though this bitch; keep going!
