Yeah, I'm still confused too. Are you saying you combined かれえ and かりい to make かれい? Or that カレー is actually pronounced かれい? Or that you just changed え to い for the hell of it?

Edit:

The word *wild card* wasn't used. Honestly, I said don't worry. However, both of you seem too overly concerned. The explanation is clear, and I no longer further address it. If it is the result of a misunderstand for me it ends here.

Sorry if I was annoying you. I wasn't trying to prove you made a mistake or anything; I was just trying to understand what you were saying.

I'm sorry if my comment gave offence, I didn't quite understand the explanation you gave.

I think this is what omoishinji was talking about: when you want to indicate a simple drawn out え sound in hiragana, you usually write えい like in for example the name れいこ, instead of れえこ which is something different (I don't have the linguistics lingo to properly describe this, sorry). It's the same thing when the お sound is drawn out, you write おう, in for example 王(おう), instead of おお. So カレー would in hiragana be written かれい, hence why the following word started with い. Btw, what I think made your explanation confusing, Omoishinji, was that for some reason you wrote カレー→カリー... Maybe you meant to write カレー→カレイ?

Remember to use the very last syllable! It would have been "u" instead of "zou" ^^ ...or at least I think it would...?

As for the animal category... can insects count? big_smile

Interesting. Does that mean that えい is pronounced like ええ? I thought the い was pronounced, so ええ was quite different from えい. I tried saying ええ (as in Yes) a couple of times and it naturally comes out different from the れい in れいか. It's just as likely to be a bad habit I've gotten in to, but it sounds right to me.

フクロウ [梟]

No no, ええ is different from えい, you're not wrong about that and you definitely shouldn't change your pronounciation to make them sound the same all the time. Like I said, I really can't explain very well how it works (someone else up for it?), it just makes sense to write it as かれい... I guess ええ gives me more of a sense of two different sounds instead of just one long sound. Though sometimes えい can be pronounced like in the exclamation "えい!!!”, which is different from just a long え sound, sometimes it is very much like just a drawn out え, for example (scroll down to the Japanese pronounciation) http://www.forvo.com/word/%E6%88%90%E5%8A%9F/ has a sound in 成 that is basically the same as カレー's last sound, kind of. Like I said, I'm bad at explaining this, I've just been going on intuition most of the time. If you want to get a good pronunciation, the safest bet is probably doing what Magamo always recommends. That is, using Audacity or a similar program to record native speech, record yourself copying the thing while listening to the speech, comparing the two, rinse and repeat.
