That kind of behaviour is the prime reason why I've ever gone to an anime convention.
I remember feeling kind of embarrassed once when I was leaving an anime store, and there were these teenagers sitting around outside the store dressed up like Kingdom Hearts characters. And it wasn't Halloween.
My friends know that I like anime, and listen to J-rock and K-pop. However, I've learned from past experience - people do not want to hear you talk about anime incessantly.
All that being said, that video was hilarious, and so, so true.
tbh, most of the people i've met that were like that have either grown out of it and found their own niche, or became more like a japanese otaku. i don't know anyone that has kept the american otaku mentality.
one of my friends actually networked like crazy through otaku stuff, and when he went to japan he had friends all over, tons of stories to tell, he was out every night.
of course that first phase is pretty awkward...
(i think cosplay is kinda cool actually, at least if it's at a convention or gathering. i wouldn't go to the store in it, though.)

actually i think anime conventions here are pretty cool, and i don't even watch anime anymore. with the right attitude you could meet a lot of people and everyone's really friendly because of the atmosphere... though some are confrontational, and some carry that annoying "greater-than-thou" attitude, whether it's the nerds that don't like you because you're not as nerdy as them, or the people who go to the convention and hate everyone and think it's beneath them.
i would actually be more scared of the japanese conventions. i feel like they're dirtier, haha.
