Acquiring an Internship at a Japanese Business in America?

I currently work at an entry-level part-time job in the food industry (i.e. I'm a damn cashier and server). After I take my vacation to Japan in December, I'd really love to come back to continue my school education and also acquire an internship at a Japanese company. I live in Illinois, where Chicago is of course, and whose sister-city is apparently Osaka. Not that it matters, but I'm trying to clarify that we have a fairly decent Japanese population here (in comparison to the surrounding states).

Since I want to come back and almost immediately begin an internship I definitely need to start exploring options now. I just started a business administration major and also want to pursue a minor in international business. That being said, there are probably many Japanese companies here in Chicago, but what would be the best way to finding them and approaching them about a job internship?

A Japanese friend of mine recommended to go to the nearby Japanese market and pick up some of the free newspapers they have, which I believe list ads. Since these papers are targeted at the Japanese who shop there it may yield some companies worth looking into. Furthermore, when I asked her if I should call the companies, she suggested I mail my resume and cover letter instead.

Since most of you don't live here in Chicago I know the help I'll receive is limited, but maybe there are a few internet resources worth exploring. If not that, then I'll listen to your advice. I didn't post this in the other forum because that was for jobs IN Japan, whereas I'm not in Japan.

Ask your career center to cold call some companies for you or do it yourself.

I've called my career center and they only provide me with tools to acquire a job/internship, but do not act in a way that a job agency might. There are a lot of internships on the site they provide to their students, but not really with Japanese companies (the purpose of this post). I have tried 2 Japanese job agencies here and they both told me they really only get businesses who want full-time employees. Since I'll still be going to school I can only work/intern at part-time still.

Then you need to do the work yourself. Find out who the HR person is at the major Japanese businesses with Chicago offices and call them up.

You won't find anything except mom and pop stores in the Japanese newspapers.
