I tried to search the forum about this topic, but to no avail.

Ive been wondering recently why does FNN sometimes allow you to watch videos from outside of Japan and other times not? it seems very arbitrary...
Also has anyone had any luck ripping the videos to re-watch later? I tried download helper and similar tools which work for youtube-like sites but it doesn't seem to detect them...

If all the methods you mentioned fail for ripping videos, you can use the following:

The only limitation is the duration of the video must be under 15min, and there will be a watermark in the corner. But that should be fine for your purposes.

Video capture! of course! a very easy solution i had totally forgotten about. For anyone that is interested, I am using Cam studio since it doesnt have the watermarking/time limit issues.

I had the same problem with FNN. I found the TBS news stream site as a decent substitute, but instead of outright blocking streaming TBS just has constant lag and connection timeouts...

Poking around on japanese YouTube though I found the TBS news channel where they repost many of their clips! It would be more helpful if they included the accompanying articles in the description, but their short description is still better than nothing.

News Asahi also posts news clips to their YouTube channel.

Great stuff to watch between timebox review sessions.
