Hello. I'm going pretty hardcore with learning the Core2000 but I want to make sure i'm being reasonably efficient. I know that people use Vocab decks, Sentence decks and Production decks.

I'm just not really sure what exactly a "good" production deck is, and since most vocab decks have sentences as examples, is the idea to :

A. Do a Vocab deck w/sentence examples

B. Then use a sentence deck modified with ONLY sentences for Core2000 (reading)

c. Practice production by reading ONLY kanji cards with Kana on the back.

I ask not because I'm a newbie necessarily. I thought i understood everything until I saw the number of decks with different modifications out there. I am not asking "how to do the core2000" at all, I am asking about streamlining the process *properly* with multiple decks.

I am currently using two decks:

Core 2000 Vocab deck with sentence examples
Core 2000 Smart.fm steps decks (labeled 01 up to 10 on Anki servers)

I was only using one deck for a while and now I can see that I have Vocab and Sentences probably covered. Is there a core2000 production deck out there? Or do I have to merge several decks and make my own production deck as my third deck?
I am really trying to get this setup before I reach too far in the Core series and have to spend time catching up on old reviews. (I'm at Step 4 right now).

Any help would be appreciated.

A vocab deck doesn't have example sentences. It's just straight vocab. If it has example sentences its called a sentence deck. Seems like you're on the right track atm going through Core2000. I'd say don't worry about a production deck. The best thing you can do for your Japanese is to learn to understand Japanese as quickly as possible, good speaking ability stems from there. It's far more efficient.

A vocabulary deck can have example sentences, they just wouldn't be the target, they'd be for context/usage. ^_^

There are also other ways to improve production besides learning to understand Japanese. We have a couple recent threads on the topic here:

I guess he meant a vocab deck shouldn't have the sentence on the front of the card (which I agree with).

I think 'production' and 'production card' are confusing on this forum, some people take it as kanji -> kana, some (well, me) as English -> Japanese (pronunciation/kana)

I would call that a single-word vocabulary deck, since I have other card types for vocabulary also (such as highlighting bunsetsu and just retrieving the meaning using the sentence as the cue, or clozing and retrieving the word, etc.). I don't like to oppose sentences vs. words too simply.

Thanks for the replies guys, I recently did some more research on the topic and I'm seeing how a lot of other people are doing their Japanese deck systems. I realize that initially I was using only one deck, which was a bit slow.

My "Vocab Deck" has the word in a target sentence

Then after word I setup another deck to show a mix of Kanji by themselves and then the vocab I've learned in sentences. So it's basically Vocab drills, then production. Since i've done that its been a bit smoother.

Currently on Step 4 of Core2000.

thanks!
