1100.

Only 8 more, but I was not planning to add any new cards until tomorrow, so I'll take them as a bonus wink

@NoSleepTilFluent, good luck in part 3! You quickly adjust to creating you own stories from scratch, and for the ones you have trouble with there's always the amazing stories on this site. My imaginative memory is not that great, and quite often I find myself with a story that doesn't stick at all. Almost always the stories on this site have saved me. Thanks, everyone!

@wemaydance, if you're like me you'll find the maximum limit mentally beneficial. As I said, I *never* constrict the amount of Japanese study I do in one day, but I might limit the amount of one activity, which forces me to switch gears for a change of pace if I want to continue studying that day. That has its own beneficial rewards. And I will never play the catch-up game anymore. I've done that before (and, hypocritically, a few times in this thread), and typically it leads to an imbalance in the rest of my life as I put aside things I should be focusing on to reach an artificial, meaningless goal. If the schedule slips, then it slips. It's a problem with my priorities if I let it have ramifications on the rest of my life...

1116.

I've started breaking up my new cards by primitive groups, and adding them in that order. It helps me with the ones I don't know.

1200.

This represents a couple days' worth of studying. I've just been too busy to post an update. Things are going well so far. The pattern seems to be a fair number of kanji that I once knew (and whose meaning comes back quickly), and then variations on them that I never learned. Fact checking and coming up with stories is taking time, but isn't too difficult.

I won't be posting to this thread or the forum anymore, except perhaps to release my deck when it's done (I know some people asked for it). Some things that went on in another thread have made me reevaluate my reliance upon this community.

I sincerely wish the best to all Japanese learners out there. I hope that you all can reach the heights you aspire to.

Sorry to hear that, your posts were really interesting...
Another victim of the "forum effect" (somedy should write a paper about it).
Oh well... Good luck to you for the completion, you're almost at the last stretch!

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater -- I'm sure the drama llama will have found somewhere else to graze in a few weeks time...

I'm curious to what changed his mind.

I think it's in the air force thread.

More attention should be brought to avoiding burnout, so dangerous, mandatory time boxing maybe.

hmm? I guess that's fine. I never thought about it as relying on this community. I am learning the Kanji because I want to. Not to show off to people. So as long as you are still doing the Kanji then have fun.

じゃあ、またね。

When people talked about being able to ‘see’ things in their mind's eye/imaginative memory, I always assumed this was allegorical. I didn't realize people can actually close their eyes, think about something they may have just seen once or not know well, and have an image of it come to them in (somewhat) vivid detail. I can't do that. What I get is words typically. My guess is that I have no direct link to my visual memory*, but rather recall passes first through the language center. What limited imaginative faculty I have then pulls together an image that matches these words, but the words generate the scene, not describe it. It is the words that I remember, and the scene is constructed from them. If the words are wrong, then my visual memory will be wrong.

* Although it clearly is there because I can have vivid dreams at times...

Me too
its a pain for this method, really making things a struggle

A book like this would help a lot, http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Visualiz … 0553270443

I'm sure everyone can actively visualize, you just need the right practice and technique.

Checking in to give a warning to those also making their way through RTK-1: frames 1300-1400 are killer. I'm in the middle of the thread chapter (frame 1362, I think) and none of the stories are sticking. I've had two consecutive days of no new cards added and about 30 fails (70% retention--but nearly all the fails are the same newly added 糸 and 阝 kanji over and over again). I'm not adding new cards until I get these ones to stick. This is *much* worse than the low points I felt around frames ~350 and 700-800.

Beware.

There is one story that's stuck though: 絞 “STRANGLE. Fed up with these stupid thread kanji, I snapped and strangled Spiderman. Quick, mingle in with the crowd and disappear...” wink

mafried maboi! がんばれ! Glad to see you didn't fall off the course. Although I don't think you'll be done with rtk1 by the end of February anymore lol =P. Keep at it and I'll see you in the rtk3 THREAD later this year.
