Any players, fans of the professional games, or both? I'm kind of sad it isn't big in Japan, because I'd really like a copy in Japanese. I'm watching GSL season 2 now, anyone else?

All I know about Starcraft is that if you like watching matches, you have a lot of Korean listening material available on youtube.

That's true. I wish I was studying Korean so I could buy the game in Korean, lol. Even when listening to the English commentary you can hear the Korean commentators in the background yelling in excitement.

I lived in Korea, they even have a starcraft TV channel! (not to mention a Buddhist channel and a 囲碁 channel) I love Korean TV, so different to the TV here in Canada (even if there are 3 channels devoted to english programing)

Yeah, I've been doing the SCII thing recently.  It's definitely not popular in Japan, though I've seen English copies on sale with big signs in Akihabara, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were similar things in Denden-town.

Actually, for SC2 you can find lots of English commentary, which is pretty cool.  For Starcraft 1 you could barely find anything in English.

A big shift in the landscape is that a lot of the emerging great SC2 players are German, and there are even some Americans.  A lot of good players played WC3 rather than SC even, and they probably benefit from the fact that much like WC3 you can have far lower APM and still be a great player.

Yet, nobody is really very good at the game yet.  If you watch videos of Boxer, Nada, Saviour, Yellow, and people like that in Starcraft 1 in their prime, then watch the best of the best of Starcraft 2 you can see that there's a huge difference in skill level.

I'm a terran player, so right now TLO is my favorite player.  There's another guy I really like, but I can't remember his name right now.

Starcraft 2 is evil and will take any amount of free time you have left, it feeds on it. If you want to get anywhere with your Japanese you shouldn't buy it wink

Not that many, HD&Husky are good rest just pales in comparison.

Thats because the top SC1 players didn't play SC2 seriously until recently, call it a head start for rest of the world. Each week brings news of another top SC1 pro ending their contract on SC1 and signing for SC2. Even without them jumping ship Korea still dominates serious competition and non-Korean players rarely go far into tournaments with strong Korean representation.

Have you watched one of the TLO vs Boxer games? Even he is a TLO fan smile His placement matches are absolutely hilarious and a must watch.

I prefer TheLittleOne. He plays random (race), and tends to win his games smile

TheLittleOne=TLO smile

Oh and he plays mostly Terran now if its a serious competition. Anyway if you haven't seen this, you haven't seen anything yet (you can skip the introduction but its quite funny).

He's changing to Zerg full time for the next MLG/ GSL.   Either way he's always entertaining to watch.

I am playing on an American copy in Japan, so I'm on the American servers and can play with my friends back home.  I therefore imagine it will also work with a EU copy.

Can I be the one to say I'm tired of all the fruit jokes associated with Fruit Dealer? Tasteless, one of the commentators on GSL, is making the stupidest jokes! I watched a match from October 25th last night, and Nada has Korean fan girls? I must really get into the SCII professional scene. (Just don't tell anyone I suck at SC.)

I'm not a big fan of SC2's pro-scene. Right now, the game doesn't feel as dynamic as Brood War. I attended Blizzcon and had no desire to watch any of the games... whereas I attended WCG just to watch BW.

Strategically the game isn't as developed as Brood War. There are certain timings and things to expect so that when someone deviates from it or forces someone out of their timing, it's exciting. It's also exciting to see someone come back from clearly disadvantageous positions, which doesn't happen often in SC2. I'm not too concerned with seeing BW pros jump to SC2... Boxer, Nada, July... they were good back then but strategically they just couldn't keep up in BW. Boxer is legendary because of all the tricks he invented but I think overall he only had a 55% winning percentage? As compared to Flash's disgusting 70+% win percentage right now in an age where it's even harder to win.

Speaking of WCG, Japan did have qualifiers for BW and they were able to represent at the grand finals... but they were quite bad. After the #2 player in Korea, Jaedong, easily dispatched the Japanese representative, he said in an interview that it was like playing against the computer. Ouch.

No i mean I can play them, but if I wait for them to finish work and come home its already gone like 1-2am here...
My connections awesome I don't get any lag playing ladder games but I want to play people i know rather than random ladders all the time.

Not to go off-topic, but did you watch the WoW matches? 3v3 is way too long, they need to never do that again. Also, when SCII finished they didn't have a proper translator for the guy who won, of course he would be Korean. That was humurous and humiliating at the same time. Then Tasteless plugged his stupid shirt website. Anyway as someone who hasn't previously watched professional SCII play, it's all fine to me.

Not a fan of WoW, FFXI killed MMOs for me.
Every time I play an MMO I'm reminded of what FFXI did to my life and how I clung onto far-flung hopes so I just can't play WoW.

From what little I saw of WoW, I was wondering why no one ever took damage. It seemed like everyone was always healthy all the time.

"of course he would be Korean" is kinda stretching it. SC2 is still new so internationally it's still kinda equal. I think the only advantage Korea has right now in SC2 is that it's the country most geared towards pro-gaming, so all the infrastructure is there... the culture of team houses, GSL, etc. But as far as skill level, remember, Idra was the favorite to win GSL last season and he's American... so it's equalizing pretty well right now.

I've chosen to be a professional SCII player. I suck, but I've got a lot of heart!

A lot of posts about watching sc2 but none of actually playing...

I do tend to play regularly, but have been in like a 2 week slump of sucking.

I play occasionally but I get so frustrated with sucking! You guys can add me if you want. I don't really care for the character codes, so you can email me on here if you want my email on the game. I play Protoss and I like stalkers and warp gates! big_smile

I don't know Ocircle, so do the professional tourneys play via internet, sounds risky, or with an official modified version?

P.S. FruitDealer lost in the round of 32! Aw, butterscotch!

In order to play against another player, you must play online. No exceptions.

I play as well.  I'm on the high end of platinum league, and I think I can make diamond before too long.

I've played almost no games as zerg or toss.  I don't have all that much time to play, and I figured I could learn one race in a much shorter amount of time.  I chose Terran because in BW they were the most interesting race to play (lots of fun micro).

TheVinster wrote:

At least when it comes to going from lower leagues to platinum, I think there's pretty simple things you can do.

1) Never ever do anything with your mouse that you can do with your keyboard.  Learn the hotkeys to produce every unit.

2) Hotkey your Nexus and production buildings.  I do one hotkey for each type.  (For example, one hotkey for all gateways, one for all stargates, etc.)  Also, use hotkeys to control your units in battle.  Keep your hotkeys regular so you aren't confusing yourself by changing them every game.

3) Once you have hotkeys down, you should be able to keep producing units effectively even when you're in battle or doing something.

3) Look up (either on youtube, or team liquid, or gosugamers) one general build order, and one build order for playing against each race.  Practice them until your can execute them well.  Don't try anything else until your good at them.

4) Try to keep map control and get lots of money (makes lots of workers almost all through the game, expand often, especially when you have map control).

That's all it takes I think.  I'd say it takes about 100 games to get good at all of those.

If you know all of this and I'm being condescending, my bad!!!
