Sounds like a lot of work! The editing function as you described it sounds great. Whatever system you end up with for the customize keywords function, when it is integrated into the site it will be really appreciated. Thanks for doing this.
Yeah, I'm glad to be working on it.. 'bout time ![]()
By the way, I'm glad this will by-pass the multinlinguality problem. C'est très élégant comme solution (sans parler des non-RTK kanji). The number of users is sure to double after that (at least).
To tell the truth, I didn't think it would be available on such short notice...
I mean, that's impressive (I've only known of the site's existence for 3 months).
Thanks a bunch for increasing Japanese availibility (too bad you can't get a grant from the M.A.E. or something) now even more worldwide.
RESPECT!!!

I'm very excited to get started with this. ^_^ In the news area it says it can be found now on the Manage page, but I can't see anything there yet. T_T
Re-read the end: F. will put it on as soon as he finishes import. ![]()
Correct
It won't be read for this weekend, but very likely to be up on the staging site next week. I expect it to be "live" the week after that, so first week of November. I want to include a couple other fixes if I can, similar to the last update.
Actually the text is a bit confusing.^^"
I also was searching for the feature, because I thought you finished "customzied Keywords", and will add the import on the test page next week.
I thought it was the greasemonkey script which hid the tab, but seems I was wrong. ![]()
Anyway, keep up the good work, you are awesome!

Ok next time I will write in the future tense ![]()
I'm done with the Customize Keyword dialog (you can even edit the keyword from the Edit Story dialog on the review page). The keywords can be edited from the Study pages, but also from a new Manage page displaying a list of kanji flashcards along with their custom keywords (if any).
Now I'm loosing the big picture as I don't use the site for Study as much as I used to, and this took way longer than I wanted. I'm wondering about the value of an Import Keywords feature; seeing as there is a Edit Keywords page to edit series of keywords; and I need a clearer picture of how people want to use this.
I think I will put it on the staging site tomorrow and wait for more feedback to get a clearer picture of where I'm going with this thing, and how people want to use it.
The way I see it, the import feature is to avoid editing 2000 keywords manually if the learner wishes to use RevTK in his/her native language. Maybe something along the line of the UTF8 Anki list import?
But it's not that urgent, and it can be done manually for now (thanks to your Customize fonction
), so don't strain yourself if you feel like doing something else for awhile.
Kind regards, (we owe you BIG time, man!)
EK

Sorry it will be on the staging site tomorrow. Technically it's working on there but I haven't tested enough and my brain is fried.

That was what confused me as well. ^^ Except for the greasemonkey script, because I don't use that.
Anyway, great job Fabrice, I'll be patient a bit longer. ^^
Wow. Just thanks for all the work you're putting up. I read that you started the website a while back just new and learning PHP/MySQL, and looking at the git repo it's now all pro symfony-zend-prototype looking
Makes me wonder, is dev also your day job?
About the feature, some keywords really didn't make sense to me so I had to remember both Heisig's and mine. Adding to the fact that I'm french and have no idea what words like "reed" means... Now it'll be much easier, so double thanks!

The new "Customize keyword" feature looks awesome.
The only problem I have noted so far is that, in the Study page, one still needs to enter Heisig's original keyword in the "Browse" field in order to find a particluer kanji. Did somebody else note that?
Thanks a lot, Fabrice for undertaking this major upgrade. It will be very helpful if I can use alternate keywords without the need to run an external script, especially when I am studying on my iPhone which has no Firefox browser.
However, I doubt I will have the patience to type in the whole list of French keywords I am currently using in a Greasemonkey script, unless an import function is implemented — sorry for always asking for more !
Ive tried it out now, and ive found no issues (or further suggestions) about it, just a big THANK YOU for working with this. A great great relief, personally the most important update on the site, second to the site being born in the first place ![]()
Fab, you're the MAN!
I can't find the words to begin to explain how good it feels to finally be able to switch "grace/graceful/gracious" to "gracieusement/plein de grâce/élégant". The relief...
I feel like I could fly (I'm staying away from the windows, don't worry
).
Edit from study, edit from review, edit from manage: awesome (doable in any position).
So I tried to picture myself as a serial editor, and a few suggestions came to mind. I'm not saying you should do any of the following, but you should at least consider them if you can get away with them without having to put too much work upfront.
In the manage page, to edit, something like a tabulation hotkey would be cool (if it's already there and I couldn't find it, I'm sorry). For example, you click on the edit icon, type in your new word, then by pressing tabulation, you start editing the next word immediately below, making chain editing less of a chore.
Also (still if it's doable), the display rows should start containing a hundred items (for the time being it's 10, 25, 50 items). This would be for chain editing, but also for the "my stories" section, where I sometimes felt like a bird's eye view was missing.
Well, that's it. Incidently, I found an additionnal bonus to the editing feature: I used to trip a lot on keywords which are both a noun and a verb with different meanings, for example, board (I mixed it with plank). Now I just edit like this: board (v.), and it's cloud nine again.
A thousand thanks for your thousands of hours.
Hail Fabrice!

Yeah, I'm phasing out prototypejs now in favour of YUI 2. I wish I'd use YUI 3 straight away but it's still in beta and I had lots of code for YUI 2 from past projects to make dialogs from ajax content and so on..
I worked the past four years at Emakina. I started out "slicing" which is converting the designer's PSD into HTML, CSS and sometimes Javascript (menus and so on). Then gradually did more and more "front end engineering" jobs, which is what I enjoy most.
There is a significant problem I have with the website in that I started five years ago, and the front end code and php code was really old. The php code got a make over with a lightweight hack of Symfony, which is elegant enough; but the javascript always lagged behind. So for example this feature I thought it would take 2-3 weeks but it took nearly 7
I always end up writing 50% of Javascript API stuff and reworking old code. I've been thinking more about this lately because refactoring or changing APIs is a big problem as a one man team. On the other hand, in those five years, especially at that company I was basically following web news every day and there has been so much progress in Javascript APIs, web development frameworks, Ajax, HTML and CSS standards. All my time at Emakina I learned to build 100% identical sites in IE6 but today it's almost disappeared (1% of visits on this site).. So a lot changed really fast and it's hard also to keep up ![]()
Thansk for the kind words, all!
I'll look at any issues or suggestions more in detail following days. Coming is a 3 day weekend where I will not be able to do any hotfix, that's why it was safer to put it on staging first.

I don't know when import will be available. Also when this goes to the live site, the Greasemonkey script will probably break.
If you send me your keywords I will import them in your account during the next update. So when the site is back up, your keywords will be ready. After that you can change them and continue to export as usual (custom keywords are exported as part of the flashcards export).
It would be easier if you have CSV style file in UTF8 format: each line should consist of kanji or Heisig number, followed by tab, space or comma, followed by the customized keyword, whichs ends with the newline.
I don't know what the Greasemonkey data file looks like, but if you know how to get it, send it to me and maybe I can write a simple script to move them in the database.
Please send them as attachment, and include your exact username and the email address linked to your account.
Fabrice, I love you! ![]()
I just tested the feature, and it's awesome. I didn't think it would take such a short time to implement, so I guess I underestimated your skills. Thank you so much for this early Christmas present!
The only thing that keeps it from being perfect is that it doesn't affect search and automatic keyword bolding, but that's not really an issue for me.
Oh, and I just found out I can't edit the keywords for things that aren't in Heisig, like "Unicode-0x65c1" (旁), but I think they are unaffected by many other features too.

I think I'll be able to fix that for the update. Showing the Custom Keywords in the drop down is quite another thing though.

Those Unicode-0xXXXX kanji were put in the database back when I worked on Trinity, and they have actually the unicode number as frame number. So it worked on the Study page but wasn't really planned for.
I haven't planned enough yet for non RTK kanji support on Study and/or Reviews. This will be for later. Although a lot of the time spent on Cust. Keywords involved indexing everything in database by UCS-2 code instead of frame number, so non RTK kanji support is getting closer.

I agree. I've been thinking about ways to "chain" this on the Manage page but I hoped nobody would notice. Good testing
I'm thinking of adding another button, to avoid changing the default behaviour of the tab key (although it's a fine solution too). For example "Next", which would be on the left side, so if you press tab if twill highlight this submit button first, press enter, and this would close dialog but open for the next keyword automagically.
I'll work on that for the update.

Hey, that would be nice too.

どうもありがとうございます for considering my requests.
Have a nice day. ![]()
Checked out the feature on the staging site and I think it's great: simple and easy to use. The best thing about it for me is that it will be much simpler in the future to review on the three computers in different locations I sometimes use for reviewing, or on those occasions I'm on the road and using a portable version of firefox. No more editing prefs.js in my firefox profiles every time I add cards with a changed keyword. Yay!
Personally, I probably won't use the edit page (after I initially edit the cards I have changed already using Woelpad's script) because I will just change the keywords for new cards as necessary when I add them to my deck, doing so from the Study page, at the same time I add my story. So, I'm glad the keyword changing can be done from the Study page because I will be mainly using that method.
Of course, the edit page is a great feature for people who are changing all words for whatever reason they have: all into different languages or using a Japanese keyword.
The only shortcoming would be that one apparently won't be able to see the changed keyword in the drop down menu of the Study page as you can currently with the Greasemonkey implementation (Fabrice: "Showing the Custom Keywords in the drop down is quite another thing though.") However, it will apparently be working for the searching and that is more important (but how will it work for search if it won't appear in the drop down menu-aren't they in the same field? maybe I misunderstand things so I'll just wait to see how it works out when it goes live).
Great work and thanks again. Can't wait to use it when it is active on the live site.
First things first,
I think another topic is necessary for bugs and errors in the staging site, because one has to read the previous posts before posting new bugs and it takes a while going through the comments and suggestions.
So here is my bug report
When I added 5 kanjis and reviewed them right away. I made a mistake and let the card go to the study section. When I opened the Study the page and everything was ok until I pressed add to learned list button. Then all I could see was the following
Assertion failed at line 52
I am using Firefox 3.6.12 Greasemonkey was active but the staging site was not added. I can provide more details if necessary. I tried again and saw that I can create the same situation again with other kanji as well.
There is somethig strange I noticed after the error. I closed the tab and opened the staging site again. I went to the study section and on the left there was a strange notice it showed me 1 kanji to review and 1 kanji to restudy. But it could be only one of them probably the bug occured somewhere between or ....
Ok now I checked the actual site and noticed the as long as you dont review the number of kanji to study stays constant. Is this the way it is meant to be?

Hello,
I really appreciate the work done in this website and the way it is done. Customizable and solid work. I have been working for JLPT N3 with this site for about a month. Everything is in order except that I had to work from my computer in my lab, and now it wont be problem anymore. As soon as I noticed the editable keywords function in the staging site and tried a few steps. I use a mix of Kana and Turkish alpahet as keywords and it works well (even with the irregular Turkish characters like ş ç ö ü). I sincerely thank you for all the work and effort put here. I dont have any excuses to postpone learning kanji anymore. (the deadline is helping as well)
I done some straightforward testing and I wanted to try the keyword to kanji script with greasemonkey. I added
http://revtk-staging.koohii.com/profile*
http://revtk-staging.koohii.com/review*
to the included pages list (I am not sure if this is list name) and nothing happened. Then I noticed unusual index.php (http://revtk-staging.koohii.com/index.php/review) in the adress bar and added that to the adresses mentioned but it didnt work as well. I need the Kanji to Keyword script for my study and I would like to be the beta tester for that version.
I am waiting for my kanji to expire to be able to further testing of the staging site.
