Wow, thanks Tobberoth.  That sounds like a good buy.

Well, our class for Japanese 5 is going to use a textbook - apparently a better one than Nakama.  It's called "Minna no Nihongo".  I haven't bought it yet because I am wary of buying any textbooks just on general principle.  (I want to see if we actually use it before I shell out the money for it)

I'll look into that.  My luck with buying Japanese grammar books is normally really bad, but if you recommend it, I'll give it a try. ^_^

Wait what, you start using Minna no nihongo after 2 years? Where I studied, both minna no nihongo books were covered in the first 6 months, then we went over to "textbooks" made for JLPT2 studies. Are we talking High school Japanese here?

Regardless, the minna no nihongo books are good, but I feel you will probably find it extremely simple if you've studied Japanese for two years, they start at the really basic stuff and only go up to JLPTN4 level.

And yeah, you'll probably love the dictionary of japanese grammar books. If I ever have trouble grasping a grammatical structure in Japanese, I just open those books up right away and it usually becomes clear as day.

Our schooling is stupid, I admit.

You see, the college I am at . . . well, I started attending here because I initially was going for Graphic design.  It's a small, state school, and they don't have funding for most languages, so they get funding from the government and call them "Critical Languages."

But I had always loved taking Japanese (I'd taken it before), and the only reason I was going for Graphic design is that I had some experience in it (I worked a few years at a newspaper)

The more I took graphic design classes, the more I hated it.  The more Japanese I took, the more I was convinced I had to do it for a living! (or more accurately, I had to LIVE Japanese with Kanji in my veins or something melodramatic. ^_^)

However, since it's a shitty school (to be quite frank) the Japanese instructors were NOT professors.  They were graduate students there from Japan, getting their Doctorates in ESL.  One was somewhat abysmal, probably due to age (around 25-yo) the other is much better but still trying to learn English herself (around 45 or so, I'm guessing)

But while the older teacher *loved* Minna-no-Nihongo, she wasn't the first graduate student they picked.  So the younger one got to choose the textbooks, and she chose badly.

So instead of teaching out of the bad textbook (Nakama) she used Tae Kim's site (not that we knew. we thought she was typing it all out, working her buns off every weekend!  Not so!)

So now, the elder teacher is finally teaching the Japanese 5 class. (We had to work our butts off to even get this class, and if we have less than 6 students registered, they're canning it. Period, no other option.)

Right now we have 5 students registered, and 2 others working to test in.  So if ONE of them makes it, we'll have a class. >.> (I'm hoping they'll both make it.)

But yeah, we're going to START with Minna no Nihongo 2.

(takes deep breath.)  So that's why I'm tutoring.  Because I really want this class!  *whimpers*

So if the class is going to start with Minna no Nihongo 2, then it seems like a pretty reasonable assumption that the test to see whether the other two students can make it in will basically cover the stuff that's in Minna no Nihongo 1. You don't necessarily need to buy MnN1, but you do want to make sure you know what's in it, because that's the stuff you'll want to cover with the student you're tutoring. Handily the 'grammar notes' book is on Google Books so you can scan through the contents page to see what it covers.

You know, pm215, you must be psychic!

Because my student was just telling me yesterday that she was worried because even though nobody in the class has had Minna no Nihongo 1, our teacher told her the test would be on it.  I was just scrambling last night to come up with a way that she could test in without either of us having to buy the book. >.>

You're a life-saver!  That will really help a lot. ^_^
