It took me a while to figure out what was wrong with my EPWING dictionaries and it turns out it was the Japanese characters in the path name... It would be nice if Rikaisama would just say "Hey dummy, I can't find the dictionary."
I'll put a note in the documentation for now.

Anyway, this looks great, are there any future plans to somehow allow for recursive lookups within a dictionary definition? I guess I can use the "save to file" feature for something similar for now. (Actually, I guess this works just fine.)
You can perform recursive lookups with Super Sticky mode. (Default: 'U' key).

Is there any way to have it for the English dictionary to default to "hide definition" and "not-hide" for Sanseido mode? It's very annoying to toggle these when I just want the quick reading lookups on the English dictionary but don't want the English definitions.
That is annoying. I'll add it to the bug list.

Also, if dictionary hasn't changed, it would be nice if it could temporarily buffer the last X number of dictionary lookups. This would be especially useful for Sanseido mode, so if you mouse over something then re-mouse over it, it doesn't have to hit the slow server each time. This would also would help with EPWING, since they aren't exactly the fastest lookups either.
I'll add it to the wish list.

So, call me stupid, but I was having a ton of problems after updating to the latest version of Rikaisama. At first things worked well, but apparently at some point I had switched out of firefox with Rikaisama's settings still open to another open window. When I came back to firefox the settings window had gone hidden behind firefox, and rikaisama was acting extremely buggy and dysfunctional (as it would be, since its not intended to be used with the setting dialog left open). Popups werent working, Odd thing was, I closed and restarted firefox several times in an attempt to fix the problem. Firefox would seemingly close but the settings dialog did not, so that it was only on getting ready to restart my system and closing everything i had open in disgust that i saw the open dialog window hiding behind another window that had ALSO been open. Once i closed this settings dialog and restarted firefox, rikaisama resumed normal function. I only wanted to post this, not because I think its an issue that should be fixed, but because I searched this forum and google and the rikaisama site for about half an hour looking for the solution, which I only found when i had GIVEN UP SEARCHING and finally closed firefox for good. So hopefully this will turn up for anyone else suffering the same problem.
Also, regarding supersticky mode, when supersticky mode is on, no other popups open. I assumed this was normal behavior, so I instead sent words from the "stickied" popup to the lookup bar, seeking recursive function. Doing THAT causes the popup bubble to close, at which point rikaisama no longer functions for me. Restarting rikaisama and then disabling supersticky mode while the original popup bubble is still open (the one that comes up when u first turn on RS , that tells u what keys do what) fixes this, but I didn't think it was intended behavior, so I figured I'd mention it while I was here.

Thanks for the report. I'll see about adding this to a future troubleshooting section on the Rikaisama webpage.

Just to clarify: In rikaichan/Rikaisama, there is only a single shared popup. Using the lookup bar will cause the Rikaisama popup to be replaced with the lookup bar popup. In Super Sticky mode, clicking on the page outside of the popup will cause the popup to disappear.
Also, I couldn't replicate the issue you describe where Rikaisama no longer functions.
Never had an opportunity to say thanks for this, so thanks. ![]()
I came upon a bug today. I haven't encountered it anytime before during the couple of weeks I've been using rikaisama. Awesome plugin, btw.
After having saved a lookup to text file, it stops displaying definitions. The lookup seems to work just fine "below the hood" so to speak, since correct kanji and reading seem to show up. It's as if jdict only had " " in the definition fields for every word I look up (if that makes sense). I haven't changed anything before this bug appeared; rikaisama is the last thing I installed on this machine. Disabling and enabling rikaisama doesn't solve the issue, but restarting Firefox does.
Bug? When I activate the Rikaisama Lookup Bar (Alt-Del), but not the normal Rikaisama mode (Alt-Ins), then the keyboard shortcut R for Real-Time to Anki does not work. Expected behavior is that all keyboard shortcuts also work from Alt-Del mode (I am using Rikaisama as a dictionary during JP lessons to import directly to my Anki deck).
And thanks for this awesome plugin!
Not sure if its a bug but... When I try activate EPWING mode, it doesn't carry over to the lookup bar, which is what I use most.

The lookup bar is a little neglected since I don't use it myself. I do plan on adding RTI/EPWING to the lookup bar someday though.

@cb4960: Is there a possibility of implementing a feature that would allow to save J-J definition at the same time? I have to add them manually from Sanseido for example, which gets a bit of a work... I also really like the example sentences at http://alc.co.jp - any way to import them? Thank you ![]()

For the next version, I might add a few more save tokens:
$e0 - EDICT definition
$e1 - EPWING dictionary 1 definition
$e2 - EPWING dictionary 2 definition
$e3 - EPWING dictionary 3 definition
$e4 - EPWING dictionary 4 definition
$o - Sanseido web dictionary definition
For some future version, I might consider adding http://alc.co.jp support.

OMG, can't wait for it!!! ![]()
I'd like a feature which would allows me to hear the word's pronunciation as the program does now but automatically, not by pressing F.
Request: Ability to change the function of the Shift key.
Reason: This key is used to switch between Kanji and german dictionary, and also for the selection of parts of a word to look up. I frequently have to use this key for marking things with Webmarker. When I hold down shift and another key, I almost always have to press the shift key twice or more times before I can mark the word. This is troublesome on a laptop, and not very convenient on a PC. So it would be great if you could change it in a future update. ![]()
@arnaldosfjunior
Maybe I'll do this for some future version. I'm not sure how well it would work though.
@Nagareboshi
I'll see about putting it in the next version.

YaS: It can happen that one word can't be found in the currently activated epwing dictionary, but in another, one has to switch over to manually. Wouldn't it be very convenient, if there was an auto-search, switch, and fallback function, that does this automatically?
Example: When I hover over a word and it can't be found in dictionary 1, a quick search begins, until it finds the word in dictionary 3, and displays it. After hovering the cursor over the next word, the program either switches back to the preffered dictionary, or to the next dictionary that contains this new word.
Would it be possible for you to implement such functionality? Or is it rather difficult and time consuming?

You can already do this. In the EPWING tab of the Rikaisama Options dialog, look at the "Dictionary fallback" setting.

Ouch ... Why didn't I notice that ... ? I was aware that there was a fallback, but not that it does also work in this way ... Thanks for pointing me to it. ![]()
Just wanted to say this is an awesome program and thanks so much for making it.
I just got rikaisama set up yesterday, and even added four new cards but from then on whenever i try to add new cards to anki via the real-time import, anki just crashes on me, I've tried re-installing rikaisama, offing and turning anki back on on, offing and turning on my computer as well bu to no avail.
Anki only crashes when I'm trying to add cards by real-time import other than that it works fine. I've looked all around already for help already but couldn't find any relevant information, so has this happened to anyone else before and how can I fix it. Thanks in advance for any help given.

Could be due to incorrect entries in the "Save format" or "Field names" text boxes in the Rikaisama options dialog. Turn on the Real-Time Import debugging/logging feature:
1) In Anki, Settings -> Plugins -> Open Plugin Folder...
2) Open Real-Time Import.py in a text editor.
3) Change line 36 from "DEBUG = False" to "DEBUG = True"
4) Restart Anki and try again.
5) A log file named RealTimeImport.log will be placed in the plugins folder.
6) Try using the RealTimeImport feature a couple of times and then paste the contents of RealTimeImport.log here. This will help me to diagnose the problem. Also, it would helpful if you posted the contents of the Save format and Field names boxes from the Clipboard & Save tab of the Rikaisama options dialog.
Hey guys, first, I can't thank you enough. I'm a huge fan of clozed sentences for review, but up until Rikaisama, making the cards was such a huge chore that I could rarely get myself to do it. Now, by using a combination of Rikaisama and the Dragon dictation iPhone app, I've found a way to mine even offline sentences with little to no data entry. And that all makes me EXTREMELY happy. XD
Now then, not to beat a dead horse, but I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out what the heck exactly I'm doing wrong with setting up Firefox to access my EPWING dictionaries.
To be clear, I've:
・completely uninstalled Firefox, and all preference files.
・renamed all my EPWING dictionaries, removing all non-ASCII characters
・installed Add-on Compatibility Reporter
・set all my files to be viewable, as I am running Lion
・followed all instructions as listed in the Mac Rikaisama.zip file
・pointed rikaisama to look at two different EPWING dictionaries, one at a time. Neither works
・tested my EPWING dictionaries in kotonoko to make sure they work
And, the current state of my rikaisama is this:
・rikaichan dictionaries work
・sanseido works
・in EPWING mode, it highlights words/characters, but no popup is displayed
・if I highlight a hyperlink while in EPWING mode, it displays a popup, but the popup is translating the alternate text for the hyperlink, by using the rikaichan dictionary
・sometimes gets stuck in one dictionary mode or the other, and is rendered useless until I close and relaunch rikaisama
I have not:
・modified any files related to the Add-on Compatibility Viewer
・tried Mac Rikaisama with Anki (and actually, the tab for Anki is absent from the preferences section of Rikaisama, though I'm not sure as to whether it was added in a later version. As it stands, I'm not sure how I would point rikaisama to the Anki deck I want it to edit.)
My system:
・Firefox 12.0
・OSX Lion 10.7.3
・1.8 GHz Intel i7 MBAir w/JIS keyboard
Any help would be greatly appreciated and totally awesome. I had the latest build of Rikaisama running great w/Anki, and would have kept it that way, except for the EPWING problem. I stupidly missed the note to install the Add-on Compatibility Reporter until after I had done the Mac Rikaisama install, so I will uninstall and try it again, in case that fixes things.
EDIT: After going back and re-reading all the posts, I'm installing WINE and trying again.
EDIT 2: Installed WINE, reinstalled everything, and got the same problem.
EDIT 3: OK! Got EPWING to work somehow by downgrading to Firefox 8.0, executing everything I could think of in the epwing folder, reloading all my dictionary files, and hammering on the "o" and "p" buttons. After confirming that it was working in 8.0, I then reinstalled 12.0 without wiping any of the extensions, and it kept working. Huzzah! Real-Time Import, however, is still a no-go.

I've just found out about this program and... it's just AWESOME.
Can I suggest to add somthing like the look up on sanseido for tangorin.com? I really like how things are displayed in a really clear way. The kanji lookup in particular... with examples and an animation of how it is drawn... is it possible? (*_*)
I have to point out a bug related to a previous one.
Rikaisama was working completely fine even with the anki import feature.
Then I accidentally tried to import an anki card highlighting a word. It should have import also a sentence, but there was no 。 maru symbol (and it was a long list), so there was no "stop point". Rikaisama said nothing, but Anki crashed.
I restarted Anki and tried again without the sentence token (also I've removed the sentence field from the deck).
Obviously I had no luck or I wouldn't be here.
I de/reactivate rikaisama and tried again. Same result. So I uninstalled rikaisama and the real-import plugin, reinstalled them and tried again (btw I don't understand why rikaisama saved my preferences even if it was uninstalled).
My next move would be unistall Anki and/or Firefox, so please heeelp!!! *_*
Minor problem
If I start from a list - like I just did - "it seems" I can't get a sentence as an example for the word...
Is it possible to add a token to fetch the first sentence on tatoeba and import it in anki with the other data?
Thanks

I've tried to make that log as you said to the other user... and used it 4-5 times. This is what I got. Please help me I can't believe I had such a treasure in my hands and I've lost it just after few hours I was using it.......
Here is the log:
RealTimeImport.doDeckClosed: START
ServerManager.stop: START
ServerThread.stop: START
RealTimeImport.doLoadDeck: START
ServerManager.start: START
ServerThread.__init__: START
ServerThread.run: START

@kazeatari,
I think you forget to mention what the issue it. Is Real-Time Import not working for you anymore? If so, maybe Anki didn't shutdown correctly due to the crash. Open the task mananger and kill all instances of anki.exe or restart your computer, whichever is easiest for you.
It's not entirely clear to me what you did to cause the crash. Importing single words from a list should work fine. Rikaisama will stop on a line feed, among other things, if "。" isn't found, so that shouldn't be a problem.
I'll add tatoeba example sentences to the wishlist.
cb4960, thanks again for you work, Rikaisama is awesome!
Is there any chance that in the future you add to Rikaisama a feature like that of this project:
dictscrape: library/anki plugin for semi-automatic card creation?
Probably both of you could collaborate or share code or experience in same way.
