A change in the web server config caused the problem.. Thanks for posting about it here, or I wouldn't have noticed until later!

こんなすばらしいプログラムを作ってくれてありがとうございます!
ホントに!

Since anki is great for people studying japanese, I'd like to switch to it from jMemorize, wich is great but doesn't offer the same nihongo-centric features.
But no matter how I reformatted the utf-8 csv I exported from jMemorize... it just does not want to import it. I managed to reduce my file in a "kanji ; meaning" styile, but it doesn't work for me.
Anybody managed to import a csv generated by jMemorize?

Thanks again!

I'm talking about the non-flash version.  I can't use flash on my phone.

It'll probably work if the format of each line is:
Question[tab]answer
semicolons were probably causing the problem.

about the phone version...

again, this is possibly a problem that may effect me only but, my cards really do contain a lot of information. especially the grammar cards. here's a typical example of a JLPT Level 1 grammar entry:

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
Q:
11
~をもって
(固)
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
A:

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

so as you can see, there is quite an amount of information on the answer side of the card. this does not all show on the phones interface because there is no "scroll down" feature. Is this a problem with my phone or is there not the option with Anki on phones to do as such?

Cmaj7(Nice handle!),  I imported my first deck of all the jouyou and it was fine(Not sure if it was CSV).  But when I tried to import a sample deck to try switching to and fro, my sample deck imported to Memory Lifter fine, exported fine, but only 2 cards import into anki.  Tried everywhichway, comma, tab, txt, utf8, but it doesn't like my list for some reason.  It only loaded card #1 and #50.  BTW, it was a JLPT level 4 vocab list.  Will try again over the weekend.

Resolve, love the tweaks!  Coming along swimmingly! smile

Someone wrote somewhere recently about entering too many kanji at once and having it come back at you.  I see what you mean now! About 300 coming my way tomorrow.  Never had that with Memory Lifter. Good thing it's Saturday.  But it's throwing things further into the future and smoothing out so it's not as bad as it first appeared.Have a great weekend!

He did say it was a bug that you can't scroll on phone.  I think this is another reason to push for that "Don't review this on the phone" or some form of "alternate" Q and A fields.

Don't get me wrong though, I may always seem to be complaining, but I think Anki is the best SRS program out there hands down.

Have you tried reviewing large cards on the non-flash version?  There might be a page size limit but you'll probably be able to see most of the card (and scroll).

Though I still like the idea of having the option to not quiz certain cards on the phone.

Cmaj7: thanks for the report. Please email me the file you're having trouble with so I can check it out for you. My email address is at the bottom of the Anki pages.

Aikiboy: if you're still having trouble, please send me yours, too!

Yorkii: as stated earlier, it's a known issue that scrolling doesn't work on the cell phone flash interface right now. JimmySeal's suggestion should work around it for now. Note that while I don't want Anki to prevent you from making such long cards, you may want to consider how effective it is to create such mammoth entries. Please have a read of http://supermemo.com/articles/20rules.htm - especially point 4.

i understand the concept, but for language learning I have also been going by the philosophy that one should "include all uses off the word".
it goes back to the "すごい = cool " and how this does not help to explain things such as すごい風だ。 In this case the information is too little. again, with grammar entries, to have explanations as well as a variety of example sentences allows me to then construct my own sentences and get them looked at by my friends etc. to check my understanding...

so in short, the more information one has on a word, the more one will understand it's range or usage etc. this is totally not related to anki though and has been discussed to a great degree in other parts of the forum.

If a word has completely different meanings, I think you should be adding separate entries - for example:

昨日の風はすごかったよ = the wind yesterday was terrible!
彼、すごいね。= he's amazing.

That way each usage is broken up so that you can practice it separately. The problem with large entries is that when you look at a word, you're forcing yourself to recall all possible ways it could be used. That is not something we normally do in a conversation. If you're studying a word which has multiple meanings or uses, or you're studying grammar, I think you're better off creating multiple cards which drill you on the different ways you can use the word. That also keeps the information as atomic as possible and facilitates the learning process.

good point. i had never thought of doing that actually. that way you will get to know which areas of usage you need to practice more, instead of a vague overview of the whole range of usages.

excellent idea.

Resolve beat me to the punch but I was also going to point out that splitting up the information can help you a lot.  I hadn't read that Supermemo page before, but I recommend having a look at it.

Incidentally, #6 mentions the importance of imagery in flashcards.  There are several reasons why
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9f/Giraffe_standing.jpg/220px-Giraffe_standing.jpg->キリン
Is a much better flashcard than
giraffe -> kirin
or
キリン -> giraffe
so I'm glad that we can insert images using HTML, but it's another place where a "don't show this on my phone" checkbox would be helpful.

Haha tongue Wiseass.  My point is that most phones can't display images above a certain size (about 200 x 300) and even for the images that could potentially be displayed, they would use a ton of packets.

Personally I would like the feature because my phone can't display characters that aren't in JIS第1水準 or 第2水準.  I can messily decompose characters, as in
桌 {ト+日+木}
And I have been doing that, but it starts to get really ugly if I want to quiz myself on a compound, like 桌子.

Wow, thanks for that link. I had never thought about memorizing this way, but now that I've read that, I can see how cloze deletion would be really helpful while enforcing correct grammar, although I'm somewhat concerned over how much easier context clues will make flashcards. Huzzah for run-ons.

Actually, I hadn't tried it yet.  But placing an <img> tag in a flashcard only gets it to show an icon of a piece of paper with the corner folded over.  Hmm....

Images are relative to the current directory, not the directory your deck is in. So you need to set the working directory to the location of your deck.

Also note that images are not stripped out of the last card text as they probably should be, so it'll get messy if you're using big images. But it does work in a limited fashion:
