What are the differences, which ones are used often?  Also, if someone could hit on the basic differences so that I can apply the knowledge to other similar verbs (for example, other verbs ending in む where a まる and める form are also present).

Why in this sentence is 縮まる used instead of 縮む:
皐月も徐々にリョウに心を開き始め、2人の仲は急速に縮まっていく
