I will probably order a Zune HD 32G from Amazon. As most anyone would, I wish to put some dramas on it, but I've become really addicted to having the Japanese subs while watching it on the computer. I am assuming I will have to hard-sub the subtitles to the program and then transfer it to the Zune HD. So my question is how to hard-sub? Or is it so much of a pain that I should just try to do without Japanese subtitles on my Zune HD at least.

P.S. For anybody who owns a Zune HD and is studying Japanese, besides now having the proper language codecs, are there any advantages to having one? I don't like Apple products, so as useful as the iPod Touch may be for apps such as Anki on-the-go, I'll just wait until I get a new phone in July, for that.

I dont know anything but, just keep in mind this:

Screen: 8.4 cm (480x272 pixels)

meaning the screen is nowhere near hd.

Eh, I don't care too much. The screen will definitely be much better than on my current Zune. That does mean maybe subtitles wouldn't be the best idea, huh? Lol. But man... it has Japanese language support. No more boxes like the Zune I have does. That'll make me happy.

my ipod nano has a setting to change the whole interface to japanese... isn't a zune pretty much the same thing as an ipod?

My friend has a zune and he likes it a lot, i was just curious if you are talking about "japanese language support" as in interface language, or something else?

Well, yes. You see on the model I have it's the first one that came out. It doesn't support ANY Asian language, so everytime I have Japanese it just displays empty boxes. The Zune HD does support Japanese, and while I'm not sure if you can change it to Japanese I am fine with having it at least read it.

On the topic of hardsubbing, you can try this site:

www.videohelp.com

I used to do this with english subs on my zune 80. I wish I could remember what I used to do it. It can be a bit of a pain at first (depending on what file format you're using) but once you have the programs (all freeware) and knowledge it's pretty easy. All the info's on that site, you just have to look around for it. As for how Japanese subs will look on a Zune HD screen I have no clue.

You're right though, it might be worth it just to get rid of those ^&*%ing boxes though. I had some podcasts with all japanese characters and I couldn't tell whether I was scrolling down or not. Nothing but boxes as far as the eye can see.

@jettyke It's called HD because it can do 720p output. Kind of lame (although it's a great marketing ploy) but I guess if you don't have bluray or some other method it would be pretty useful.

Know what bothers me? Why do 720p shows have to be so large. Someone program a new encoding thingy to make them smaller.
