What does 見てみた imply?

Me again...  Hate to make another topic with a sentence question, but I'm having a hard time understanding 見てみた.  Thanks for the help.

He tried to, from an objective viewpoint, see the situation he was in~
I'm not sure if that's how those words translate, since it's the first time I've seen them.

But anyway ~てみる = 'try to/see to'
