Yeah, I used to often do so back when I couldn't attentively hear most of what I listened to. Now, my ears are so attuned to Japanese (via a rather consistent hardcore immersion environment) I can learn by ear. But even so, there's still words I don't know that come up, so I find it best to sit down once in a while and listen to songs while reading along with the lyrics for an attempt at full comprehension. Half of the words I find in hip-hop lyrics are words I know, but are words that are still floating in the fresh pool of short term memory.
