I leave the internets.. for 10 days. I'm going to an internet addiction treatment facility in China. Just kidding. I'll be off the network until 31 January.

In my absence our mod extraordinaire kazelee will be the allmighty ruler of this board. He said he doesn't have much work due to the civility on these boards, so I say start a flame war or two, that'll keep him busy  wink  Maybe about Esperanto or something!

@meolox: that's the most bad ass kanji i've ever seen. Please tell me what it is so I can look it up, the stroke order is next to impossible to work out.

His icon? it's 龜 the traditional character for 亀 before the simplification reform. It has a silly and inefficient 'official stroke order' so I suggest using your own stroke order for it.

On topic of that kanji (you guys might know this already) the 本字 for 秋was 龝 (that's actually a slightly simplified variation of the original, which has a few more strokes on the left-hand radical. I am not sure how to type the original version on my laptop)

Before the reform, かめ looked like a Ninja Turtle ready for battle.

@Aijin, I quite like the official stroke order for it, its quite easy to remember I think. If i'm not mistaken there's even a character with 龜 in an enclosure making it even more difficult to write and make legible at small size.

See this video for the stroke order/etymology:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv4s2X84H1k

EDIT: Seems that video doesn't have the stroke order, just the etymology, can't remember where I found the stroke order for it but its hardwired in my brain and fingers from writing it so often to show off to chinese friends smile

You mean 鬮? I know it from Mandarin (Mainland China simplified it to 阄), but I've never seen it used in Japanese.

Stroke orders are very personal, so whatever works best for you, that's great smile I have some unorthodox stroke orders sometimes anyway. I can't stand the official order for 医 for example tongue

I would, but I'm too busy learning 100.000 kanji a day and teaching them to Chuck Norris.

Have fun Fabrice, and when you're back tell people on the forum how life in the real world feels like.

If you mess an official stroke order, doesn`t it mean that you will not be able to produce and recognize calligraphy, especially the "grass" script?

I like the stroke order of it too all except for the last part how you write the entire enclosure for the X and then the X. It's a bit odd but quite neat and easy to remember. Thanks guys.

Aesthetically I prefer the one Katsuo posted.  I like when the strokes go horizontally across the middle.  This is one of the most badass looking kanji I have ever seen.

Nah, that isn't completely true. It's more about recognizing a system. If you make up how to write all the kanji you won't be able to read grass script, but if you know the principles behind the official stroke orders, you will recognize most. There are of course exceptions.

Actually the second stroke order makes perfect sense!

edit: it's always interesting to see rare kanji in peoples avatars and ponder what it is smile

Then there's people who use 癌!

Can't say I've seen that kanji used too often, but it does seem to pop up.

Tricky icon switch mezbup, tricky indeed.

Japanese monks stole all the kanjis from China but were too lazy to learn them all, that's what there are only 3000 kanjis in use in Japan, and 50000 in China!

Japanese sailors stole the tempura recipe when they were in Portugal.

But in the end, we're all buying their video games and learning their language big_smile

I gotta say I'm thoroughly intrigued and impressed by 癌 which is why it took the top spot for a while but 鬮 blows it out of the water.

Obviously you are wrong mypapa! You are worse than Hitler!

The Chinese stole the kanji from Korea and wouldn't give them back, which is why they have to settle for hangul.

Korea invented everything and Dokdo is theirs.

Also, killing whales is fun. We should kill them all, with ICBMs.
