This was extremely popular when I lived in Japan in 2007 but you don't see it much lately.

Hahaha don't you love the internets. I was looking into that a few months ago, when I came accross the name of Sonya Thomas, also a female competitive eating champion. I was amazed that she was so thin. Then I read more about it and was a bit surprised to find out that not all competitiors vomit after a contest. Somehow the body gets rid of the excess. I don't know what kind of dump they take after that but .. clearly they are not ingesting all these extra calories or Sonya Thomas would look like a hot air balloon.

I kind of doubt that. I know modern Japanese toilets have all those ridiculously advanced functions, but still they do get clogged.

I think that has a lot to do with it. It's not as noticeable in the picture--maybe she fixed them--but I saw her on TV and her eyebrows were weirdly shaped. Almost pointy, even.

I remember this one show I watched in particular that really gave me insight into the importance of being almost rail-thin in Japan. There was a girl who was a perfectly healthy size--maybe size 4 maximum--and I think every guy but one told her something to the affect of 痩せたほうがいい. She had some slight baby-fat, but nothing unsightly or what I would think would be unappealing. It wasn't until she lost 10-20 pounds that she was essentially an acceptable human being. And to be honest, I don't think she looked any different.

I know a gorgeous thin American girl who lives in the Kansai area.  She teaches at elementary schools, and students call her fat fairly regularly.
