I recently came across this interesting text editor. I thought would be great motivation to use it for writing my dream journal in Japanese. Then I found out it is mac only sad

Does anyone know of something similar that runs on Linux? It would be even better if you could write right to left... It would be so nice to type in big_smile

I don't know, you just made me realize Ultraedit doesn't have this capability. Makes me mad.

Vim can do this, although you have to compile with the +rightleft option. Haven't tried it myself though.

EDIT: nevermind, I think this option is actually more suited to languages like Hebrew that are written right-to-left but not vertically like Japanese.

You can write vertically in Word. (Look under Format --> Text direction)

I personally use Dark room to type sometihng on the computer though (mostly in English), although I usually prefer the scraping sensation of pencil on paper.

I have just confirmed that OpenOffice.org can handle this as well.

Menu - Format, Page:
Tab - Page:
Text Direction: Right-to-left (Vertical)

Cool.  It even switches your font to the vertical version (so that punctuation and the long-vowel dash is correct).

Too bad my favorite font is horizontal-only.

Yes, all major word processors have this option. Not only for Japanese, but sometimes one need to write in English in that direction.

Four year bump.

Unicode 7.0 (expected to be released in 2014) will include vertical text layout: http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr50/

This means vertical input will be possible out of the box with Firefox and all other programs that update to the new standard.
