What is a pop up dictionary?

I use www.google.com/translate and that works fine for me.

Now that is a dictionary I would never trust. It's extremely good at translating texts, making them easily understood, but it's far from perfect and will make really odd translations from time to time.

A pop up dictionary is something like Dictionary on OS X, it let's you look stuff up in programs like Rikaichan, giving you a tooltip with information when you select a word and press a combination of keys.

There's some there under the babylon/de folders there... not sure if they are the same that're here: http://reciteword.sourceforge.net/stardict/babylon.php (under 'German dictionaries')

The best german-English pop-up dictionary (with example sentences) is: Langenscheidt Handwörterbuch (German-English-German)

When you become advanced, try this one (monolingual):

now if I could just find a text transcrip of the pimselure tapes to thow into anki.....

This is the complete trancscript of Pimsleur German Unit 1 (30 lessons):

and this is the complete transcript of Pimsleur German Unit 2 (except the last 6 lessons):

http://www.fileflyer.com/view/3PI2gAr

(you cannot find these transcripts elsewhere on the internet and the links are temporary, so download them as soon as possible.)

You will not need the transcript of Unit 3, because when you reach this level, you will have good command in German and you will be familiarized with its sounds.

BTW, if you subscribe to comprehencia.com, please share the 1200 example sentences in German (and the other languages, since the 9 euro subscription is for all of them.)

Also please share any Anki deck you make, and don't be..... smile

Damn-I grabbed thoses transcripts when you first put them up but accidently delted them now and seems the link is invalid.

Sorry, but wonder if I could get them again? If its too much trouble I'll live without....

Tatoeba is another good site, and it's free. It has about 1800 sentences without audio:

In fact there's now 2500+ German sentences all added by a pure native

then the native should learn some German: http://tatoeba.fr/eng/sentences/show/1666

are you pointing out a mistake in the translation ? (unfortunately as a French I'm neither a English nor German native) if it's the case just tell us, the goal of tatoeba is both to add translation and help other by pointing out their mistakes in order to help them improved rather than just  say "haha this guy is a dumb in Korean" which is useless

EDIT :
http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences/show/471
is that way better ?

I don't see any mistake in this sentence and I am a native speaker. Or do you mean "Portmonee" should be "Portemonnaie"? Both are correct as "Portmonee" was added in the new spelling reform.

In fact it was first written Portemonnaie, so I've asked one of our german contributors if he sees a mistake or not, and he told me he could be related to Portemonnaie vs Portemonee

http://tatoeba.org/fre/sentences/show/471 (that way you have the log of the german sentence)

Sysko, do you work at Tatoeba.fr? Because I just went in and translated a sentence only to find that Swedish isn't available as a language.

sorry didn't know there are active members here.
Portemonnaie or Portmonee are both neutral, so it's "das Portemonnaie" (http://www.dwds.de/?kompakt=1&qu=Portemonnaie). Therefore the correct sentence should be "Ich habe mein (NOT meine) Portemonnaie verloren."

I didn't want to insult anyone, this was just the second sentence on the website I looked at. Of course people make mistakes when inputting 2500 sentences.

Anyway, maybe you want to fix a bug with the website: if I click on "add a comment" (I am not logged in) I get the message: "You need to be logged in to add a comment. If you are not registered, you can /eng/users/register">register here."
Where "/eng/users/register">" is a link, but an invalid one.

Eh, right. Somehow I didn't see that... But, you know, nobody's perfect.

EDIT:
So this sentence doesn't belong to anyone? How was it translated?

More than 700 sentences in 2 weeks? That's great.

@Proxx Thanks for the bug report, we will try to fix ASAP
yep people are more and more active, which make us more confident and hard-working to implement new features

@Tobberoth, swedish will be adding very soon, in fact we only add detection for a language if someone begin to contribute in it, in order to avoid misdectection due to a too huge number of languages
and in fact i only develop/contribute for tatoeba.org, as it's a free project I only do it on my spare time ;-) (so as the other developpers) so we don't , and don't want to make money which this project

@lilygilder : yep the sentence belong to noone because this sentence was added a long long long time ago, I've edited it (by adopting it) and then release it, that way everyone can edit it

@ahibba : yep we've a native german who has begun to find translating sentences funny
anyway these days the average of newly  added /translated sentences  is around 30~100 / a day

EDIT : swedish available smile

Nice work adding Swedish so fast, it's working well.

Thank you Sysko for the clarification.

But when did you add the other languages? last time i checked the website I didn't notice them.

ahibba Member

Sysko:

1. Why can't we search in Swedish or other new added languages in the search field (from/to)?

There are only 13 languages in that field while the site has sentences in 26 languages.

2. Is there any way to translate more than 1 sentence each time?

Sysko Member

the other language where added one by one , each time a user requested it ;-)

EDIT : you can now search all languages except swedish and shanghainese as the search engine doesn't refresh its index on real time ( for perfomance reason, but feel free to offer us an IBM server as a christmas present :p )

In fact for the moment there's no direct way to say "I want to translate sentences five by five"  but you can have something similar by searching a word, all the sentence result are translatable
anyway as you can see were still lacking some features, but its not because we don't want but because we're on the way smile and as Tatoeba is intended to be use by language addicts for language addicts, we begin to make it public in order to implement the feature the way it suits you

thanks all for your usefull reports and contributions smile

Thank you for your quick reply and for fixing the search problem so quickly.

Nice trick, I'll try it.

If it is possible, why don't you add an option for random 5 sentences or more?

Sysko Member

because we plan to add a specific page for advance search options ( such as "searching all XXX sentences not translating in YYYY)
but I wil try tomorow or the day after to add a little option somewhere  before but i don't promise it will be perfect  , for something more suitable you will need to wait the all in one advance search ;-)

by the way, twitter of the project ,for those who want to keep up to date for new languages / new major features
