At work I'm able to use a computer with Firefox installed, but downloading any other software is strictly not allowed.  I am able to download extensions through Firefox though.  I was wondering if there are any extensions for Firefox that would allow me to display Japanese characters without actually having the specific fonts installed on the workstation.  Does anyone know of anything like this?

Heres a little trick I used to use at school to view Japanese websites.

First download a Japanese font. Something like meiryo or ms mincho. I had to email myself the font, since they had blocked any sites that I could download it from. Now open the font (double click) and it should open in the font viewer. Here where the trick is. Even if you don't have permissions to copy the font to C:\windows\fonts , just opening the font is enough to get it into system memory. If you now restart firefox (with the font still open), and then go into options and change the font, you should see the font you have open in the list. Select it and you should be able to see Japanese characters.

My school actually caught onto this and blocked us from opening .ttf files sad Don't know why they didn't want us to do it...

This is assuming you are on windows. I've only tried it with XP, but hopefully it should work on vista or 7 as well.

Somebody once explained here a trick where if you open the preview of a font in Windows, it becomes temporarily available to running programs. This works without installing. I hope you can find more about this with Google or someone else can chime in. I can't tell what the original topic was. I have never tried myself. This would seem the best and most flexible way to do it, just save a couple truetype/opentype fonts on a usb key.

Very nice, thank you very much for your help, I'm trying now wink

OH MY GOD! You are so awesome, thank you so much for your help today!  This will make me one hundred times more productive during study at work.  Previously I was copying the box with 4 letters or numbers displayed in it and pasting it into a dictionary that I was using that had ability to display the kanji as pictures rather than text.  This is so helpful!
