One of the bloggers on the Daily Yoji website (http://thedailyyoji.blogspot.com/) posted a video recently (http://thedailyyoji.blogspot.com/2009/0 … so-yo.html) where he talks about a personality test you can take by combining the following:

1. The first yojijukugo that pops into your head (aside from your favorite one)
2. The yojijukugo that appeals to you the most.

The first one, of course, shouldn't take very much time to decide.  However, there may be a lot of people who are undecided about their second one, seeing as these things can be learned on a daily basis and the "favorite" may change.  So I think it's ok if you go through a little thinking when it comes to that one.  As he says in the video, the meanings of the two yojijukugo that you think of can very easily relate to your personality type.

Here are mine (just a suggestion but, maybe try to do your test first before looking at mine):

1. First one I thought of: 正真正銘 (kinda boring...)
2. Favorite: 意気投合   (but it's pretty much tied with 喜怒哀楽 so I'm not sure which one to pick)

Not really sure what to draw from this... any ideas?

If you take this personality test please do post yours! I'll be interested to see what yojijukugo come up.

自業自得 and 十人十色.

Though I think I'd prefer the latter if it were 九人十色, like the old line about Italians and political parties.

十人十色 is one of my favorites too~ good choice smile  I'm still unsure exactly how to go about assessing personalities based on the two 四字熟語、however.  Sometimes they can be complete opposites.

I recall reading 一期一会 before (its a good one, thanks for reminding me of it) and I've never heard the second one before.  I can't quite put my finger on exactly why, but might this say you are a "matter-of-fact" type person?  Perhaps like someone who would have a science-related major? The second one seems a bit more technical compared to most 四字熟語 some might pick.

You're overthinking it; it's non-idiomatic, so it means exactly what it says (bilateral symmetry).

Hmm... I wasn't particularly searching for a deeper meaning or anything.  Just the fact that she chose it as her favorite can certainly shed some light on what her personality is like (idiomatic or not), which is after all the goal of the test.

I'm just feverish and totally missed the distinction between the meaning of the compound and the meaning of choosing the compound in the context of a compound-choosing personality test.

Don't mind me.

Oh, the second one, I chose because it is very unpretentious. It doesn't have any sort of perceived depth about it. Plus I'm always wondering if my body parts are symmetric.

It seems to get a laugh sometimes when people ask me to pick out a 四字熟語 too.

I'm guessing you read/watch/play (as in video games) many things involving fighting/battles?  They seem kinda rare, where did you first learn them?

実存主義 - good one!  Never came across this one before~
and 一生懸命, somehow I always forget about this one, even though it's always coming up.

kazelee,
It's a nice thought but I'm not Japanese~ (but I do appreciate you thinking so :B) I'm only using the power of Google to determine these were rare... impressive huh XD
