"The more empathy one has for another, the lighter the accent will be when speaking in a second language. This is the conclusion of a new study carried out at the University of Haifa by Dr. Raphiq Ibrahim and Dr. Mark Leikin of the Department of Learning Disabilities and Prof. Zohar Eviatar of the Department of Psychology at the University of Haifa. The study has been published in the International Journal of Bilingualism. "In addition to personal-affective factors, it has been found that the 'language ego' is also influenced by the sociopolitical position of the speaker towards the majority group," the researchers stated... "
People with thick gaijin accents are not empathetic towards japanese people/culture?
That means one could tell whos the most/least empathetic by listening to the mp3s in the pronunciation thread ![]()
I guess it sort of makes sense... I mean if you don't care about the culture, you probably won't care about your accent.
Here I was being called a 'try-hard' for always trying to speak 'Japanesy', I guess they were just jealous xD
Why would you want to learn the language if you are not interested in their culture in the first place..?

Yeah, whats up with that? The weirdest case of that is the Arabs who learned Hebrew, mentioned in the article.
I can see how people learning Chinese because they're thinking solely about job opportunities, might end up not really liking the language/people/culture. Atleast not as much as a person who learns the language BECAUSE of liking the language/people/culture.
I like this research and although this seems to be the first study with this result, I WANT to believe it, because my accent is very light IMHO ![]()

The Palestinians, or 'Arab israelis', that live in israel learn hebrew. There ain't no other choice but to learn hebrew?
There are people who like to learn a language for linguistic desires, I'm sure many that visit these forums do this. Jarvik for example, learns Korean even though he hates 'them' more than a conservative right wing Japanese nutcase would.
I knew one American in Tokyo whose accent was so thick that I tried to record him as he was speaking. I should also mention that he loved Japan/Japanese culture/etc.
Anyways, for some reason he spoke with a Southern (American) accent. It was hilarious because his Japanese was around intermediate level, and he didn't have a Southern accent when speaking English.

Why does Jarvik hate 'them'?

Interest in culture and empathy are different things, I think. He may have thought of them as little interesting children or something else absurd or along those lines. Pessimistically speaking.-

How can you possibly hate Koreans, they are amazing people.

I forgot why I even posted that link.
I don't hate Koreans, I do hate many things ABOUT them though (particularly their nationalism)...
There are of course Korean people who don't listen to all the brainwashing that they are taught and as a result aren't extremely annoying. I'm friends with some of them.
Lion is somewhat right though, I have no real interest in Korea or Korean culture (aside from a few movies I liked). I just learn Korean for linguistic interest. It's hardly my main focus though, it's just language #5 of 5.

For shame, Jarvik: You're supposed to equate nationality/culture + race and then decide whether you hate/love Koreans, all or nothing. Tsk tsk.

Wait, Koreans are a race now, too. Damnit! I need to stay with the times. Do the north and the south count as different races? I've heard that the northerners average 2-4 inches shorter.

Then blokes over ear must drive yeh maed.

How so? What makes 'them' Amazing? There was a movie I wan't to see about a girl in house. Unfortunately I read a review of the movie and saw it was a remake of a Korean movie I'd already seen. Still might watch it though.... maybe...
Heil Heisig!

Indeed, I lived in Texas for four years (while Bush was governor no less)
American nationalism has nothing on Korean nationalism though. It's not just nationalism though, there is widespread vocal belief in racial superiority too. It's like the Japanese right wing wackos, but made into the standard belief system.

I think that the film industry is the one pop culture thing that Korea has going for it. In fact, my favorite movie is a Korean movie (장화, 홍련). I find the fashion awful and almost all of the music that gets play is no better than Morning Musume (in other words, bad). I'm not a giant fan of popular Japanese music either, but at least I can stomach most of it (unless its a boyband).

Likely due to poor nutrition while in infancy, but they may infact be speciating as a result of longterm famine and lack of genes from outside.

I am of the Western race, which means I must tell you that they're two different races, the South being Good, the North being Evil, and comically small--but only the North, it would be racist to mock South Koreans for being under a certain height.

Their recent singles have been pretty pedestrian, but I'd argue that Morning Musume's singles from around the 2000-2002 period are all actually very well-crafted and musically interesting pop songs. When he wants to, Tsunku knows how to write a damn good melody.
I meant that more as a criticism of the type of music that Morning Musume represents - shortlived heavily post-processed manufactured dance groups consisting of an unusually large number of members (none of whom play an instrument) whose primary appeal is sexual and not talent based.
..but whatever floats your boat ![]()

Yeah, the whole empire built around the group is something else altogether and I'm not quite sure what to make of it. But as long as they're going to be putting out music, they could do much worse than with Tsunku at the helm. He does indeed float my metaphorical boat.
@J7
Did you just speak ill of MoMu? The earth trembles as the gates of hell open so that you may fall in, Sir.
*adjusts glasses anime style* <----- seriously middle finger and everything ![]()
I hope, then, you are subjected to コンニチパー and バラライカ accompanied by the banging of pots and pans by whiny toddlers for all of eternity.
장화, 홍련 is actually the movie that was remade. I liked it. After seeing what was done to One Missed Call, though. I seriously hesitate to watch the American version.
You can bash AKB48 all you like, though. Seriously, WTF is up with that.

I fail to see your quarrel, sir. ![]()

If you want to watch something for sexual gratification, why not just go for AV? It's not like you get anything other than awful off-pitch singing from a CD etc anyways. it's a whole lot more socially acceptable for an adult male to consume AV than Momusu too.
I make it a habit not to watch remakes. They are produced by directors who are under the impression that the audience is too stupid to enjoy a foreign film.

I laughed so hard when I read this. Nice one.
Comparing Wonder Girls and Girls Generation to Morning Musume is quite weak. Morning Musume have never made even a single good song, unlike both of those Korean bands.
I would rather say that mainstream produced KPop is in a different league all together than mainstream JPop which is almost always horrible.

This is infectious genius at work.

AV!? And contribute to the corruption of very being by having Gigabytes of the spew on my harddrive? Why do a thing such a poisonous thing to one's soul as having categorically organized folders making sure to separate censored from uncensored when you can bask in the shallow yet overwhelming cuteness of all?
Actually, despite all the AV I've seen, I feel more dirty after watching stuff like this:

*shutters as a cold chill flows down spine*
Who comes up with this?

I was always under the impression that the producers themselves were the one's too stupid.
"Why does girl enter the house, again?"
"She is being led by dormant memories. She thinks it's just her intuition, though"
"That's stupid. Let's have a werewolf chase her into the house"
"But there are no werewolves in this film."
"And a lion."
"I fail to see how a lion fits into the scene."
"You're right, let's make it a werewolf that's been bitten by a lion."
"You mean a lion that's been bitten by a werewolf?"
"Wow! That's genius. Now I see what we pay you for. Now if I could just find a way to work in the giant spider..."
"Come again?"
"I think this scene here's is a bit too short, though."
"But the movie's already too hours longer than the original."
"Hmm. You're right. We need to get rid of a couple of scenes."
"How about the one where Random Chick 37 gets mauled to death by a giant headless bat while taking a shower?"
"What? Kill the shower scene? How could you even suggest.... dude... you're fired."
"What!?"
"B-b-"
"I just just-"
"Aa-"
"The film doesn't-"
"Booby booby"
"Just let me-"
"Snuckum duckums"
"That's not even a word"
"Can't hear yeh. Fingers in the ears. What does that mean?"
"You're an idiot"
"WHAT!?"
"You're a-"
"CAN'T HERE YOU! Hey tell me real quick. What's the shape of Florida?"
"Umm... a pan...."
"Nope a boot."
"Isn't that Italy. And I thought you couldn't here me."
"I heard what you said. And you're words... they hurt...sniff..."
"I just-"
"No! There's nothing you can say to make this up to me."
"How about if we... I don't know... we had a giant spider eat the giant bat after it mauls Random Girl 37 while she's taking a shower as the heroin is approaches the same house whilst being chases by a lion that's been bitten by a werewolf?"
"sniff... that's.... Gee nee yes."
"Uhh... riiight...."
