I noticed that there seems to be a huge disconnect from the continuous influx of new users and past forum topics--perhaps due to the taxonomical structure of the forum, perhaps due to the diverse linguistic backgrounds everyone comes from (the intrinsic nature of online language-learning).

Would it be good to have a section for stickied topics that users can vote on as most useful, or perhaps have users be able to customize their own sticky lists as part of their profiles? Don't know how much control Fabrice has over the forum structure... In fact, don't really know much about forums in general, so I'm on a limb here.

But there's a lot of 'large' topics that we constantly refer to and that get buried, and while they do often pop back up on the 'recent/24hrs' lists and while we can do searches to find them or request that some topics be stickied, seems like there could be better ways.

These might be useful: http://punbb.informer.com/wiki/punbb13/extensions

And a lot of people don't even search the forums they just look at the recent topics at the top (like me)

I'll have to upgrade the forum to the 1.3 codebase first to be able to use 1.3 extensions, which is more complicated than it sounds.. because I hand edited the 1.2 codebase.

Tags seem mildly useful, I'm not convinced by the favorites plugin... what if you have more than 10? Every time you open a forum you'll have to scroll down or even go to the next page to see new topics.

A lot of forums simply organize sticky topics with links to the most useful threads, couldn't we do that here?

There were some sticky topics and nobody used them, perhaps they were not titled appropriately. I can create new ones (so as not to allow regular members to delete the original post and the whole thread with it).

How about setting up a Wiki ? It seems that would be a better way to store information and for everyone to collaborate. The forum's primary nature is to allow communication, a wiki would be better suited as a repository for knowledge. I'm willing to set up a Wiki if enough people are interested to contribute.

On this forum the easiest way to read new posts is to click "Show new posts", and then use middle-click or maybe shift click depending on your browser to check the topics one by one. That is not only faster than using the Back button, it also avoids the problem of PunBB "resetting" your recent topic list after 10 mins.

Another option when the "Show new posts" is no longer available is "Show recent posts" (last 24h), located at the left of the forum's homepage.

Yes, I don't like how that 'favorite topics' extension is set up. Would be better I think if you could go to a forum member's profile for a list of 'recommended topics' or somesuch.

I think sticky topics are good, but it's true that they tend to fall by the wayside, because the active topics in the 'recent' section tend to swallow them.

A wiki would work! I forgot about that, even though I commented once about how that'd be better for language autodidacts. Looking at this forum, it really feels like now might be the time to try to collect all the ideas that've been floating around. I even stopped deleting my comments a while back in the interests of posterity. Think I'm the only user with 1000+ phantom comments. ;p

Wiki sounds like a good idea! It could solve the problem of getting the same questions reposted every week, since there would be a very handy resource they could read instead big_smile

Great idea!

Actually, I have been thinking about that for some time. Some topics reappear once and again and a wiki would solve that, plus allowing people help each other and giving this site a great added value. Consolidating all the knowledge that flows within this forum into a Wiki would be a really exciting project!

I'm willing to set up a Wiki if enough people are interested to contribute.

Where do I sign? smile

I think Wiki's are great, and I think there is some really valuable content on this forum that would be great in wiki form.

But I wouldn't count on them solving this problem at all.

Lets face it, people are lazy. There is already a search function in the forum.
And have you ever looked at the questions on the Anki mailing list? There are many many questions which get the response "please see the anki wiki".

Eh. "Lazy" ppl love wikis. It makes their lives easier. Just look at the state of journalism today! ;p Besides, the Anki wiki is just one example of wikiness. And personally I don't think it's a very accessible one, in terms of layout and nomenclature. Doesn't seem to be collaborative, either.

Here's the example of the perfect wiki: http://xkcd.com/609/

I agree but if we go through with this idea, the wiki could be clearly linked from this forum and main site, as well as from sticky topics.

ファブリス, are you going to host the wiki here, or use a wiki hosting service? I think it would work really well as wiki.koohii.com or something like that big_smile
