As much as I dislike the Mandarin simplifications, they're definitely far from illogical. I don't know if you can find it here in America, but in China there are very thick tomes that elaborate and explain all the simplifications and all the rules for it. If something seems strange and nonsensical, there's actually a very lengthy explanation for it.

after studying over 1500 characters, still some of the simpler ones strike me as the most profoundly beautiful... 女、妥、悪。。。I don't see any of them as ugly, though maybe clunky. So in small print it looks so incredibly scrunched together, like a smudge.

A lot of love for 悪 it seems. I always thought the traditional character was prettier though.
