Now that I'm in the 2,000+ card range (not counting RTK1) I've become extremely paranoid of losing all of my Anki data.   I do all my work on an Asus EEE PC and have swapped out the standard HDD for an Intel X-25M SSD.  I also copy the files every week or so to an SD card that remains in my EEE PC's card slot.   Lately I've been thinking "what if my EEE get's stolen!?" so I've been contemplating setting up another computer to network with.

What measures do you guys take to ensure your data is ok?  If I ever lost mine I would literally break down and cry.

Uhh... I just sync mine with the server and don't worry about it.

Email the deck to yourself, or drop it in dropbox.

I copy my .anki file after each session, to someplace besides my main HDD. Likewise with newly created media files.

I have a copy on my iPod (ankimini), my computer (anki), the cloud (anki online), and on an external backup disk (automatically via time machine) - so I'm not worried about mine.

You can't sync decks that contain audio can you?

And good idea about the email, not sure why I didn't think of that.

If you don't backup offline, eventually you are toast.  Image the disk.  Store it offline.  Relax.  Anything short of that is Potemkin security.

I save the decks as well on both of my computers, so it's not an issue. I suppose I could get all paranoid about it, but frankly it doesn't really hit my radar.

1. Go here and download and install the SVN server
http://www.visualsvn.com/server/download/
Set the repository location to a folder in your DropBox.

(sign up for Dropbox here https://www.getdropbox.com/referrals/NTYxODkwODk) [NB: this is a referral link and they will help me out with free space if you use it and I will be a very happy puppy! smile]

2. Then get Tortoise SVN from here and install it
http://tortoisesvn.net/downloads

3. Put your deck(s) and media folder(s) in the repository and never worry again about losing files!

Now you not only have back ups safely in the cloud, you also ave versioning on the Anki files in case you bugger something up. (you can easily go back to a previous version right from the right click menu in explorer. NB Dropbox also offers versioning!)

SVN is available for *nix and Macs as well.

I hate to break it but you're gonna die some day, so you will lose this data eventually wink

I have my anki decks on my desktop pc (@home)  and on my notebook. My desktop PC is backuped in regular intervals. The pcs are synced with ssh over computers at my university which do regular backups, too. That should be safe enough.

I wouldn't rely on the anci sync feature too much. Its free of cost but not for resolve and there is no safety guarantee. I stopped using it, after it corrupted my globals statistics again...

I'm paranoid of losing my Reviewing the Kanji data!

Any advice for how to make a backup?

Yeah, just dropbox your deck. Nothing to worry about.

Dropbox my deck? I guess you're talking about an Anki deck? But I don't use Anki for RTK -- at least not yet. I'm only about halfway done with RTK. But I don't want to lose my 1,000  stories.

You can export your data (including your stories) into anki, I think, but I don't know how...

Dropbox looks awesome, I was looking for this for a long time.

Also I just read about syncplicity. Anybody tried both? Which one do you prefer?

It happened to me once and it wasn't fun, but it was a long time ago and I only had around 1000 items in it.  I was still understandably annoyed though!

Obviously I now backup the deck fairly often!

Another option is https://ubuntuone.com/ - I guess it's similar to dropbox...

So you Dropbox peeps, do you encrypt your stuff? If so, what do you use? I was just reading about TrueCrypt.

mistamark, can you please explain what is the function of SVN server exactly? Why just Dropbox alone is not enough? Thanks for your post by the way. Due to it I discovered such a nice software as Dropbox. But I can`t figure out what is SVN server and Tortoise SVN are all about.
