Ah, I didn't mean a book, I meant anything, haha.  I don't know anything about Romania, but I assume there must be something small and cheap you can buy there that would be interesting to someone who's never been to Romania.

If you've already compared all the different places then ignore this, since I've not really looked at it in much detail and I never looked at prices for Romania, but from what I remember, White Rabbit Press is one of the most expensive ways of buying books (Someone once told me that they basically just buy from the same places we would, then add in their procurement fee), and YesAsia is only good value on small orders, since the prices are higher to offset the free postage. I think Rakuten is cheaper and they have a special small package deal, which may make it affordable to buy only a few books.

Oooh, I didn't know about the Rakuten deal. Thanks for the tip big_smile. They don't have キノノ旅, though sad.

The thing with White Rabbit is that they're the only non-Amazon (Amazon+Romania don't work together well) that had the Kanzen Master. I cried a bit when I saw the full price. Ok, maybe a bit more.

I liked yesAsia, and I found some really good prices for some books(takes a while to find them, but that's true to most shops), it's just that spending 40$ at once is not something I can afford to do too often.

The things I do because I can't read on a screen *sigh*.

I just landed my first non-teaching job in Japan. I'll be working for Rakuten in Tokyo starting in January.

I met one of their senior HR managers years ago at a conference in Tokyo before I moved to Hawaii to start graduate school. I pulled out his business card a few months ago and shot him an email asking about upcoming job opportunities since I was going to be in Tokyo and things went from there...

I won third place at a speech contest today. Although I didn't win first, I'm very satisfied since I prevailed against Tohoku University students (there were even grad students who partipicated!). As an introvert who loathes addressing large groups of people in the form of monologue, I count it as not only as a milestone in my Japanese learning but also as another victory in the realm of charisma and superstars, i.e. the social sphere/the public stage.

500 anki sentences [self-added, mostly from Genki I] (yesterday)
1000 RTK kanji (3 days ago)
Yeah, and I finished Genki I yesterday.

I will surpass 1,000 flashcards today, hurrah. But for now I'm reviewing old characters and I'll reach it later on.

I reached frame 900 :')

This is the third time... i had to stop all the other times because of RSI.

Even now my arms hurt but... I'll just plug on slowly 'cause I have to finish it if I want to continue with my textbooks! ( Using ITMJ which throws the kanji at you right away and assumes you know them before starting).

I only use anki to study, unless I have tests.

Did you create the deck by yourself? How do you learn the subtle differences between some grammar points?

Me? I just added example sentences from Genki after having studied the grammar part of the chapter thoroughly. I just feel that it's better than just using a core-deck without knowing the context of the sentences I added. SRS only really helps me with the details after having studied the big picture I took them from...

EDIT: I'm effing stupid...

I have one main deck (10.800) and everything japanese I study (except keigo and kansai ben) goes there.

I'm not finished yet, but I never had any troubles with subtle differences. Or perhaps I never noticed :p

And N1 grammar is harder considering that a lot of it is rarely used, so you really don't have that many chances to put it to practice.

Watched all of Erin's challenge without any subs on my 1st try. I was surprised that I got the general idea of what was happening. Didn't understand everything that was said but I point out what were words, particles and when sentences began/ended.

I thought my listening skills were terrible but I guess it's not as bad as I thought. Just need to continue RTK and eventually work on grammar and vocab smile It's subtle progress

This may not be a 'milestone' achievement, but I had a really good, happy start to my day today.

I made a lang-8 account recently, even though my Japanese isn't very good. I checked it this morning and I had a lot of replies, and I'd managed to pass back and forth a few comments in Japanese with an actual Japanese person, talking about philosophy. He recommended some Japanese philosophy for me to check out. It really felt like I'd achieved something, having actually communicated an idea and having a response I understood.

After that I went through my anki deck, had a really good day with it, really good retention and yeah. I think I've found a really good balance with my deck -- not boring and I feel, finally, like I'm going at a good pace and actually *learning*.

A bit wordy, but there you go. Just happy today. Really motivated me to carry on, was getting in a massive slump with Japanese.

@vileru: He said that he doesn't know too much about Japanese philosophers, but to look at Nitobe Inazou and his work on bushido. smile

Just finished core6k, yay! I started RTK on Jan 1st (coincidence, I don't do resolutions), so it took me slightly more than 7 months to get here...good enough I guess. I regret wasting my time going really slow during my first month. I let my daily reviews expire exactly three times, one of which was yesterday - I basically rushed the last 1000 new cards on core6k in two days, because I'm on vacation and can review 20 hours per day, and on that day I took an extra 400 new cards, but ran out of time for the last 70 reviews.

When the review count drops below 500, probably in a week, I'll start the 10k deck. I'm already a few hours in my Clannad playthrough, so I'll probably dig sentences from there. Hopefully I can read native materials without dictionary abuse/furigana by the end of the year. Quite hyped for that.

if you do the core6 and do the core10, will that mean you will know 16 000 words? of the core10 contains all the 6000 words in core6 meaning you really only learn 4 000 words?

Can someone explain that to me.

It's 4,000 words that are in addition to the 6,000, so 10,000 total.  I don't know how one can add 1000 cards in two days though and comprehend anything.  I use the iKnow! site which is based on production, meaning you are usually given the english meaning first and then have to come up with the word in Japanese.  I usually spend time on each word to understand the readings, etc.  If I add 25 words a day on average, I'm doing good.  Maybe if you using Anki and are in recognition mode, you can do it a lot faster.  I'm going to use Anki for the remaining 4,000 words at some point, but right now I'm trying to get through the 6,000.  I think I'm at 3300 words now.
