Yep.

"biang2 biang2 mian4" is the Mandarin reading.  Three characters.  134 strokes.

I find it funny how such a complex kanji came to be part of a kanji for noodles of all things. I can only imagine telling some of my non-kanji practioner friends that it is used in part to represent noodles. Oh the blank, incredulous stares I would get... XD

134 strokes? you're never going to use or even write that kanji in real context of japanese, but mandarin may be another case........

Actually you probably will never use it even in mandarin. It's definitely a rare kanji even in china i presume

I had my first decent* conversation about the Japanese economy last night at dinner. Dropped big words like government policy, deficit, bubble, China-Japan-Korea relations.

*Decent in that I got to the point where I could start talking about it. Usually I get cut off after I say one sentence...日本語上手!.... this time it came after my sentence on the Japanese economy and not before.

It's just a novelty kanji. Like how kids in America try to learn how to spell antidisestablishmentarianism or Finn kids trying to learn lentokonesuihkuturbiinimoottoriapumekaanikkoaliups.

I was always kind of confused about why kids made a big deal out of spelling 'antidisestablishmentarianism'.  The vast majority of the word is prefixes and suffixes, so it's really very easy to spell.

Though, I remember as a kid doing the same thing by knowing what laser stands for (light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation).

Just reached 1000 cards in my Anki sentence deck.  Feels like it has taken forever, especially with people posting on here about how they went through KO2001 in two weeks, or whatever.  It does feel like it's slowly coming together, though.  To everyone on here who has a job and a family, keep plugging along with me.  We'll get there eventually.  In case you're feeling like you're not making enough progress, I'll share some deck stats:

Average new seen:

In last week:  91 (13.0/day)
In last month:  235 (7.8/day)
In last 3 months:  600 (6.5/day)
In last 6 months:  1010 (5.5/day)

2603 total unique kanji.
Old Jouyou: 1945 of 1945 (100.0%).
New Jouyou: 150 of 191 (78.5%).
Jinmeiyou (reg): 237 of 645 (36.7%).
Jinmeiyou (var): 3 of 145 (2.1%).
268 non-jouyou kanji.

Another chunk of about 100 Kanji. The 3000 mark does not seem too far away now. smile

This goes out to all those who used to tell me "2000 is about native level".

According to my vocab deck I can now read just over 1700 kanji smile I feel this is a decent milestone because it's starting to feel like my reading ability is getting into the big leagues. Still ages to go before I can read comfortable at good speed with no dictionary like a native but I'm definitely struggling far less than when I dived into real reading every day just under 2 months ago.

The total amount of cards in the deck is very close to 4000 now and feels like it's climbing so fast which is extremely motivational. The next milestone for me is hitting 5000 vocab in the deck.

I have around 6500 sentences in my sentence deck in 5.5 months+immersion alot. I can understand anime+manga pretty easily, some words i may have trouble but it's linked to vocab. So i decided it's best to start vocab deck. I still feel that i can improve alot, so i'm researching around this forum for effective studying methods to improve my studying daily. I basically review all my sentences from my kanji+another kanji deck+vocab+sentence deck. I have additional decks, but sometimes it feels like alot of work. So i want to make everything into 3-5 decks maximum. No matter the numbers. Been following AJATT, i think i'm at the stage where English translations are not needed majority of the time. I feel that i should make everything into monlingual, if i have no clue of what's going on i can easily just translate it via bilingual dictionary and then just put it up as a monolingual look-up into my SRS. Plus i'm noticing it's better to understand everything in "japanese" and not always translating to english. It can get annoying trying to translate everything into english from japanese. So i think if I can "understand" it correctly, then that's what counts as understanding. So when that same phrase, grammer, context of a sentence comes up again i can recognize it with ease.

Had dinner at a Japanese restaurant entirely in Japanese from woah to go smile Even read a Japanese magazine for the local Japanese expat community while I waited for my food. Sure it was simple conversation but it felt good.

I spun out on ice today and hit something.  Then 3 minutes later another guy did the same thing and hit my car.  So I got to deal with 1)a police officer 2)the guy who hit me 3)the guy who hit me's wife 4)my mechanic 5)my mechanic's children and 6)my mechanic's wife.  All who didn't speak English.

Thank God I've studied Japanese as long as I have, or this would be an even worse night.

First of all - You've been missed, Blackmacros! big_smile
Secondly..
Just realized that I have 6166 sentences in my SRS. Thought I had 5000-ish. Yay! big_smile I'm pretty happy with that, considering I started adding sentences in August.
My goal is to up that to 11k by the end of July, when I'm (fingers crossed) heading for Japan to study...
