Quiz: what's the keyword? (Hint: one stroke cannot be seen.)

こころざす my colleague sitting next to me said without blinking. "Kokoro-what!?" was my reaction. It's a puzzling feature (for me) of the Japanese kanji usage that they sometimes insist on using a single less-known kanji for words in which you can clearly distinguish two separate words, as in this case 心 (こころ) + 指す (さす). 'Point to the heart' is a rather poetic description of 'intend', wouldn't you say? I bet the Jomon (prehistoric Japan) thought so too.

Another one: こころみる. I'll leave it to you to find the kanji and meaning.

Oh yes, the Heisig keyword is intention, obvious enough.

Fabrice, if you'd like to put us on the homepage, by all means do so,
I would be honored, as Chirstoph says.

I'm so glad to hear the rumblings of another get together.  Both meetups have been a lot of fun.  I look forward to many more!!

Same here, I really like that photo. I wish it'd stay on the homepage... perhaps I'll make a RTK meetup page or something wink

I'm coming to Japan in April ! I'll be staying around Osaka mostly, but I can spend a few days around Tokyo, and I'd love to visit Kamakura!

I'm waiting for my plane ticket confirmation...

Fabrice, that is awesome.   If you only have a few days in Tokyo, I can forgive you if you can't make it out to Kamakura.  I would be happy to come meet you in the big Toke.

But if you want a dose of Old Japan, spend a day in Kamakura, and I'll be happy to show you around.

Great news! Hope I can make it if there's an 'RTK get together' around that time.

As we've already got a photo with the dude in Kamakura, what about one with the bad boy in Nara?

im very near nagoya.  ill be pretty busy in april, but, if there is an rtk gathering in the kansai area (osaka, kyoto, nara), i would certainly try to make it.

my vote is for the other big boy in nara.  or a nice spot under the hundreds of sakura trees lining kyotos walk of philosophy...

Good shout decamer0n! On the plus side for Kamakura is the fact that Wakela takes it upon himself to kind of organise things. If a get together is going to happen in the 関西 hopefully there is someone down there who could take charge, so to speak.

Wooo-hooo! Another RTK get together would be fun. I'd be willing to travel to Kansai or help organize something in Kanto. All the suggestions given so far seem great.

Fabrice, when you know them, pass on the dates you'll be available, and we can start figuring out when and where.

Ah, too bad, taijuando. Let us know if you ever do get here. I have a brother who lives in Brooklyn; I may get to the city at some time.

just a thought.

there are quite a few members of the website in japan and while most seem to be around tokyo, there seems to be a fair number spread out west too.  and some of them would probably be interested in joining a get-together (especially with our esteemed leader in attendance!), and maybe even hosting if they happen to live in kansai.

it may be a longshot.  but anyway, i think many people are using the site but not checking in on the forums.  i used to be one of them.  haha.  so, if a quick note about the possibility of a get-together in kansai was posted on the main page of the reviewing site, we might capture more members.

maybe...

Yessssssss! I'm coming!

I will be in Japan from April 9 to April 30!

After some consideration I booked a plane ticket for 3 weeks instead of 2. I want to make the most of it, especially that I haven't been outside Europe for years.

I will be staying with a friend in Osaka, whom I was corresponding with for some time. Her family will lodge me from April 9~20. We will be visiting Kyoto together then I'll visit Nara, Himeji, etc, basically staying in the Kansai area within that period.

Lodging help

This is a little embarrassing, but I guess it doesn't hurt asking...

Would anyone residing in Japan, in the Kansai or Kantou, or even Chuubu area be able to lodge me any time between April 20~30 ? (I take the flight back to Belgium on April 30, in Osaka airport).

It would be very helpful because in my haste to book a decent airplane deal, I forgot about the Golden Week that starts at the end of April. I might have difficulty finding cheaper hotels or even ryokans in that period. hmm

I thought it'd be fun if two or three persons maybe can lodge me for a night or a couple nights, even in different prefectures, I'll move around and it will be a fun way to occupy this period, and see a bunch of places.

My current plans is to do some sightseeing in the Kantou area during this period, Kamakura, Nikko, Kawagoe, .. if I get a Japan Rail Pass for the last two weeks of April I should be able to move around easily.

Of course I'll be happy to cover the costs for the food etc. If you think you can lodge me sometime between April 20~30 you can email me via the forum email, or the contact page, thanks!

3rd RTK Get Together!

From April 21~30 I will be happy to meet you all and have the third RTK get together !

As decameron suggested, I will post about this on the news page, so depending on how many people come, we can organize two afternoons if needed. For example we can have one small gathering in Kamakura, and another small gathering in the Kansai area.

For the Kansai gathering, I might be able to join around April ~16-20.

Just post if you can come during that period, what dates you are available, and what region of Japan you are residing at in case you can't travel too far?

See you in Japan!

Hi ファブリス

I live in Tokyo (just near Shinjuku) and would be very glad to meet you if you come to Tokyo. Just had a baby so Im afraid it would be a bit difficult to put you up. Would be great to meet anyone else who is in Tokyo too.

Currently I am planning on traveling during golden week. However if I don't I can put you up for a night or two. I live close to a JR station.

I thought a little strange that this topic was very quiet lately, so thought maybe people are waiting from more confirmation on my part?

Well, I'm all set, I'm probably the most flexible since I will be on holidays, and from April 20 to 30 I have no hard schedule yet.

It looks like I'll be able to stay with decameron, and Scooter, thank you guys!

While I stay with Scooter I'll be in the Tokyo area, we can have a meetup over there, and I would be really happy to spend an afternoon or a whole day for those that have time, sightseeing around Kamakura.

When I stay at decameron's place I will be in Chuubu, kind of halfway between Osaka and Tokyo, so if people want to have a meetup in the Kansai area that's all good for me too, this would be in the last week of April, preferably.

There are a lot of members in Tokyo (even from the past 30 day active members list) so I'm sure we can have a little meetup!

I think a get together like in Kamakura needs some preparation in advance, but for a meetup in Tokyo this can still be organised a week ahead, I'll just pop in a "internet cafe" and check the forum big_smile

I'm all for a meetup in the Kansai area as well.

Here's something to get started, assuming we have two get togethers:

Kansai Meetup
decameron, Fabrice

Kamakura / Kantou meetup
Wakela, Fabrice

synewave, Scooter : either one?

guppy?

Did you decide which part of the week you will be here in Tokyo?

Kantou for me. We can do something in Tokyo proper (I know a few decent British pubs, or we can do the Japanese thing at Watami or similar) while you're here. As for Kamakura, I'd return if the event fit my schedule. It'd be great to see the guys again and to meet some others, too. (And have Hawaiian burgers again!)

I would love to have a get together featuring Kaminarimon (雷門) in Asakusa and a visit to my favorite ramen shop in Akihabara. They are only 10 minutes apart by subway and are two excellent (and radically different) places to experience Japanese culture.

Woops, sorry Scooter, thought I emailed you last week. Your suggestion in your email was best, would it be ok around 20~25? Then I will be closer to Osaka for the end of April and my return flight, I'll have to check with decameron.

Yeah, that's fine. Let me know when you have firm dates so I can confirm with the guest room host.

ファブリス、
I'm all for another meet up.  I can easily do a Kamakura or Kantou meetup.  However, if
you need to consolidate and arrange something in Tokyo, I should be able to make that too.  Just name a time and place and I'll let you know.  Look forward to meeting some of you (again).

As far as meet ups go, Saturdays are best for me. That said, a week day off work is feasible. Anywhere between Osaka and Tokyo is fine.

EDIT: Seeing as I've not been to Kyoto for over a year, I'd be up for decamer0n's walk down 'Philosopher's Way' or getting over to Arashiyama might be fun.
