CosCom is the publisher of high quality learning material for Japanese. Their flagship product 2001.Kanji.Odyssey is suitable for those who are new to learning kanji or for those who have already learned the basic kanji characters.

It contains:
* Important readings
* Over 3,500 important vocabulary words with audio
* Over 3,000 example sentences with audio
* All examples are accompanied by English translation and ruby
* Stroke order for over 2000 kanji

The 1,110 kanji you will learn in the first two levels of this ebook will cover over 90% of kanji that appear in general documents overall. Learning those 1,110 characters with priority is the most efficient way of Kanji learning.

There may be more than one reading for single kanji, but not all readings are frequently used. With most kanji, only one or two readings per kanji are frequently used. So they separated readings of each kanji into important and unimportant ones.

To supplement your studies with the ebook we created a free deck for the Anki (a program that helps you remember) available at http://ichi2.net/anki/ that will boost your progress in reading and understanding Japanese.

http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/9812/out2.png

It contains all 3104 example sentences of the book with readings and audio. All together there are 6208 cards ("Listening" and "Recognition"). The Japanese text is stored as gif images, so you can not easily edit it or search it.

Update: If you want the same deck with searchable Japanese text (i.e. stored as text not images) + the Japanese text as images, download this deck and replace the old one with it:

The website above has no relation in any way with RtK forum, and the material published there does not necessarily reflect our opinions!

You need WinRAR (http://www.rarlab.com/) or a compatible program to extract the deck. It is distributed as three rar files (ko2001.part1.rar, ko2001.part2.rar and ko2001.part3.rar). Make sure they are all in the same folder and then open ko2001.part1.rar. Then extract ko2001.anki (the deck itself) and ko2001.media (the folder containing all mp3 and gif files).

This compressed file contains an Anki deck with 1551 cards and an Excel spreadsheet.

The Kanji and Kana are GIF files. The English translation is text:

This deck is for Book1. Anyone interested in a deck for Book2?

I'm looking for the new audio of the example sentences.

Umm...I think a few people are going to be fairly annoyed with you. But apart from that, what exactly is the point of a KO deck with furigana on the questions?

Because of the same reason you uploaded the excel files/torrent in the other thread of KO2001.

Do you need one without furigana?

The point of KO2001 is to learn vocab and kanji readings. If you include furigana in the question it entirely defeats the purpose of what you're trying to do. And I assume you're just copying the images from the ebook into Anki, in which case you can't produce a deck without furigana. The two options the book allows toggles between furigana for everything and furigana only for things you haven't learned yet. It will often place furigana over the entire compound you are learning except the one kanji you are studying. There is a huge difference between seeing 技術部 and trying to remember the reading and seeing ぎじゅつ__ over the top, and only having to remember ぶ. This makes the furigan'ed images basically useless for reviewing purposes.

As for people being annoyed at you posting this its for the exact same reason people were exasperated with you for posting about the torrents in the other thread. Coscom put out a great product and a lot of people here think we should reward them by buying their product. Thats why access to the community created spreadsheet (which is much, much better than the torrent you posted) is given only to those who can prove they purchased the book.

Why? I told you that I have 4 deck 2 of which do not have furigana on the question.

I didn't post any torrents in that thread.

blackmacros wrote:

Do you think that if I share my decks no one will buy their products?

They're just sentences with translations. KO2001 is more than that.

How did you make those decks? Did you edit the images individually? Because the e- book itself provides no way to get the Japanese sentences without at least some furigana as far as I'm aware. It must have sucked if you had to edit them all by hand :-(

You didn't post directly about the torrent, you just uploaded/posted about the files which can be found from the torrent. Which is the same thing in essence, so it makes sense that if the people who contributed to the KO2001 spreadsheets were annoyed by the torrent then they would also be annoyed by your post. And its also why they will be annoyed at this thread. I wasn't here when they made the spreadsheet, and I don't personally think this will have any impact on Coscom, but I can also understand why they [the people who worked on the spreadsheets] would be annoyed.

EDIT: From the other thread:

vosmiura wrote:

People here who own the book collaborated to collect the KO sentences over a year ago, agreeing to only show them to other people who have the books.  The spreadsheet you posted a link to was leaked by some a-hole.

That is why many people on this forum will be annoyed by you posting this- because you're essentially doing the same thing.

Wow this would be great since the compounds are highlighted.  The furigana kind of sucks but honestly I can deal with that by simply opening up another window like notepad, scaling it to size, and placing it over the top to block my view.

I'm not annoyed, as this as nothing to do with the KO sentence effort done here.  Outside of that, people can do whatever they want on their own responsibility.

Sorry I know I quoted you but I didn't mean to imply anything about what you believed. I just thought what you said was a good summarry of why people were annoyed by the last thread, and why they might be annoyed by this thread. I can unquote you if you want.

I'm not annoyed either since I was never part of the original spreadsheet effort and I already have the book anyway.

Orginal image:

After 'convert 0016ex-02b.gif -crop +0+25 +repage crop.gif':
http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/7001/crop.gif

This works with all the examples of the book. 'convert' is part of imagemagick. I guess there might be other ways to automatically remove the top 25 pixels of all the images.

Hey thats pretty handy. Here's hoping ahibba knew something like that and isn't kicking himself right now for wasting all that time doing it by hand tongue

I think the community spreadsheet is probably a lot more useful though. It means you can search sentences by kanji, and gives you the freedom to highlight and change the sentences however you want (for example, I highlight the entire compound not just the target kanji. I also sometimes highlight other kanji if they're new etc etc). Of course, you have to have bought the book to get it lol.

Also do these decks have the kana as a field?

That's great xaarg.  You could use the original image and the altered batch to create three columns in a new spreadsheet and then import all of that.  That way you'd have everything (Kanji without Furigana for the question field, full furigana Kanji sentence in the answer field, and then the english meaning in the third field).

Now if we could just get a hold of the deck again.....

Are there any examples that appear across 2 lines?

just out of curiosity why not have the sentences in text instead of images? Seems like it would be easier that way, allowing you to highlight your own words or easily break apart difficult sentences or isolate compounds and what not, if such a need arose.

Are you talking about the original images in the book? There are quite a few, from memory.

Because unfortunately the ebook provides all Japanese text in image format (its apparently a 'feature'- so you don't require foreign language support I guess?). Thats why the community collaborated on creating a text spreadsheet of all the sentences.

I am sorry. I reconstructed that 'convert' line from memory, so I forgot the second part of it, that removes the area from 45 to 85. The proper line that also handles two line images is:

convert 0516ex-01a.gif -crop +0+25 -chop 1x45+0+40 +repage crop.gif

Orginal:
http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/3354/0516ex01a.gif

Modified:
http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/7001/crop.gif

There are 1875 two line images and 1229 single line images.

ah ok I must have missed where he said ebook. I already have the spreadsheet and own the books so I don't really care that much, just seemed odd to do it that way because I like to have options.

Launch this perl script inside the root of the KO2001 CD, after setting "$output" to the directory, where all the furigana-less images should end up. Imagemagick for Perl is required for it to run.

*removed link, see first post in this thread*

It contains 3104 facts (book 1 and 2). The images without any readings are on the question side. The images with all readings and the English translation are on the answer side.
