The refactored website is nearly done and is now publicly available for testing !

  http://test.koohii.com

Note that most pages will have a URL that starts like this, this is normal:

  http://test.koohii.com/index_staging_nodebug.php/...

So what can you do on the TEST version and how can you help?

There are two main goals for the TEST version:

- Find bugs and fix them before this becomes the default/production site.
- Implement minor fixes and tweaks based on your feedback and suggestions.

I will do my best to implement minor tweaks and finetune the site before it goes in production, giving you a chance to suggest minor improvements before this update goes live. Please note that the test version shouldn't last more than a couple weeks, any good suggestions that require more than a few days of work will go on a todo list for a next release.

A few important notes about the TEST version

- The test version uses a TEST database. You will find your existing account there, but it is based on a backup from May 29. I highly recommend that you create a dummy account, to avoid messing up with your real account in case you logged in on the production site by mistake. Otherwise make sure you see the new site header, then you are sure to be on your TEST account.

- The TEST site stills links to the production forum. Be careful that if you click the forum link and then the link back to the main site, you will be back to the PRODUCTION site, not the test site.

- Keep in mind that anything you do on the TEST database will eventually be lost. This data won't be migrated to the live site! The purpose of the TEST database is simply to allow testing new features and catch bugs before they get a chance to affect your real  accounts. Take advantage of this and create accounts to review and repeat specific lessons, add and remove any range of RTK kanji flashcards etc.

- Creating an account on TEST will not create an account on the forum. However updating your password on TEST will update your forum password, if you are using your existing account!

Hidden features

- The fullscreen review mode has not visible option yet, you need to add "/fullscreen" in the url, example:

   http://.../index_staging_nodebug.php/review/fullscreen?type=untested...

- It is possible to see and edit the Story by pressing the S key. It will open up a window that you can also drag and move around. This feature is currently unsupported, and will remain hidden. Consider it a "test" feature. It will be in the production site, but I offer no guarantee it will stay the way it is now.

Future releases

Future releases will also use a TEST period whenever possible.

In the future I will discuss with you my todo list and try to run some kind of vote to let you choose what feature would go in first. Starting with the very next release I will also give an estimate of release date. Lots more to talk about but little time. I will write a more detailed post to cover the changes during the test period.

Thank you for your help!

PS: Greasemonkey script users please disable all scripts on the test.koohii.com subdomain, as they will most likely not work. Woelpad is aware of the test version and will most likely fix the scripts for when the test period ends and the new site goes in production. He's a busy father so please be patient wink

Do you want bug reports? smile

I noticed that on the study pages, stories are not handling the ' character, for example check the 欄 page.  The ' is coming out as "&039;" and the following text gets bolded.

Looking great! smile
Layout looks much better than before, and I like the option at the review status-page; "View: simple or full". And thats the first thing I noticed, would be nice if you could choose your personal default setting, so that the button can already be marked on "full" for example, as soon as you enter the review status (and maybe the same for "Filter: ALL, RTK1, RTK3").
Keep it up!

Why only boast about learning 2,000 kanji?  RTK3 is available for study here as well smile

@vosmiura: bug squashed!

@bodhisamaya: Well the tagline is playing on the idea that most peoplewould think "no way I'll remember 2000 characters". I don't know if it has the intended effect. Otherwise once I break the RTK kanji limit, and add support for JLPT sets, the homepage needs a major overhaul.

In the test site we can add individual kanji. This is a really handy feature but can you tweak it giving us the possibility of adding kanji not included in RTK? Or is this a big implement?

Tnx anyway, I especially love the implementation of adding individual kanji wink

One thing that I have noticed that I like about the current site over the new one is how after clicking "Add to restudied list" (while studying failed Kanji) the page is not automatically redirected to the next failed kanji that needs reviewing. Yes it is a small UI issue, but I'm too lazy to click on the next failed kanji in the list tongue.

Adding non-RTK kanji will be added at a later stage. It is not trivial because those kanji must be available in the Study page as well for users to share mnemonics. Which means to determine a default keyword for those, or leave it blank and implement customizable keywords. I think BOTH are required.

Some kind of default keywords need to be provided to help with cohesiveness in shared stories, and for those users who want to continue using english keywords. Even for new kanji learners who want to add non RTK but common kanji before they complete RtK.

Secondly, I imagine beyond the first 2000 characters many users will want to edit the keyword to something else, be it to customize the english word or to use a representative  Japanese word. So editable keywords should probably be implemented around the same time.

.. which is beyond the scope of this release.

Kudos. Great stuff. For a moment I freaked out because I had 407 reviews and then I read this uses an old database.

Question: In one article from April you mentioned that while reviewing you could click on a snapshot which would bring up a small dialog letting you read the Kanji's story right in there. Is this currently implemented? How do I see that?

I missed that article.  This would be something I would like as well.  I have been creating private lists on smart.fm so my story will show next to my review item.  The stories are supposed to fade away once the kanji is learned but I want to remember the strories as well.  They are fun to tell friends when they ask me to draw a specific kanji.

What does the Easy button do?  At first I thought it was a new feature but it wasn't. I only noticed it just now because I was looking at the site more carefully.

Is the first one here (http://kanji.koohii.com/newsarchive.php?sel=200904)

On the new site I can't figure out how to get to trinity.  Does that mean it's going to disappear with the new site?  If so, is there a way to migrate all the information from there into another SRS?  Thanks.

There's no need to, since the test site uses a different URL.

Thanks for reminding me. Over the weekend, we got one ear drum punctured with a cotton swab, one attempt at drinking dish water and one kid lost in the crowd. The other kid happily ate her birthday cake. We only have two kids, but the first one is seriously trying to reduce that count.

The error message when adding cards seems oddly placed (red window, right?).  Can it have it's own dedicated area on the screen?

It may be minor, but if you're giving one unique on-yomi per kanji, maybe allow to add cards by onyomi also. Useful for those doing the movie method.

How far up do the stacks go now? Is it still capped at 9 boxes (270 days) or does it go beyond that? This was one of the reasons I switched to Anki. I do like the expanded view though.

Is ability to use reverse flashcards being looked at? Preferably with a spaced option so there's no conflict with the forward flashcard?

PS: Just noticed, if you're own the forum with actual account, and log out of the test site with the test account, you'll log off on the actual account also. Not a bug, just something I noticed when I tried to post this message.

Nother note: On the members page, recommend listing either number of reviews or number of Kanji that are in Stack 4+ or Stack 7+. It'll be an easier way to notice either active members or members that use the site to a significant degree.

Nother note: On study page, under view all stories, one cannot sort by reports. Was this intentionally removed?

Ha. Nice...

Concnering bug reports, I noticed a relatively minor aesthetic problem when you used the fullscreen review in that the gradient doesn't degrade gracefully:

Yeah it was broken but I did some plumbing just now, try again with the "S" key (may need to refresh the javascripts with a full page refresh). It will remain a hidden feature for now, as the display is a little buggy in IE6 and Opera. It seems to work fine in Firefox, Chrome and Safari. After editing and clicking "Save" or "Cancel" also in Opera you ahve to click somewhere else to be able to use S to close the window (otherwise use the close button).

I think it will remain a hidden feature for the production update, because I'm not sure yet where it is going functionality wise. It's more of something I made for proof of concept and testing framework features.

摂? Ear and thrill work out, but if you want to fit in the complete story, I'd throw in a few more characters.

Trinity should continue to work. I will try to make a different subdomain for it like trinity.koohii.com, so I can separate the code and cleanup the old site, but it won't be linked directly from the new site.
