I am a total sucker for online games. I admit it. Before I was a Japanese addict I was a WoW addict. So naturally, not that I have a decent amount of Japanese under my belt, I was looking for some Japanese online games/MMORPGS which can be played from the states. And are there ways to bypass the regional filters which have been put into place?

Here's a list from Japanese Wikipedia of MMORPG's. I would assume most, if not all, of these ones are available in Japanese.

The most popular ones that I'm aware of are Ragnarok and FFXI

Edit: From what I can tell, WoW is available in Japan but they play on the Korean servers. I'm not 100% on this, the information was spotty at best.

If I remember correctly the Japanese version of Ragnarok Online has had a free2play server for some time now. Lots of Japanese for free, but set up some Japanese music/movies or the grinding will bore you to death. wink

He stated that he wants one he can play in the States. Gungho, the company that operates Japanese Ragnarok Online, blocks foreign IPs.

Ultima Online has Japanese servers, I believe. You have to pay to play though.

Odd, I can't get heroes in the sky to work. I've registered and I've installed the activeX control.. but when I press Gamestart, I get the following error:

該当の接続情報ではでゲームを行えません

So I can't even install the game sad

Unfortunately a lot of online games only accept players from a specific region. I hate IP address geolocation based discrimination hmm

I haven't installed it yet, but the software here:
http://www.onrpg.com/boards/62115-26/#post1215872

installed with the instructions here:
http://www.onrpg.com/boards/62115.html

will allow you to set up a JP proxy that will allow you to play some (not all) games and use some (not all) websites that block non-JP users. Supposedly. I haven't actually tried it yet. Some will block known proxies, some won't. So much for the freedom of the internet.

0.o It's worked so far, it let me sign up for flyff, which didn't work before, and now I'm downloading the client. Hopefully it works big_smile

Be careful when experimenting with proxies. Since they basically redirect your internet connection through a third party server that can make you vulnerable to a lot of attacks if that proxy is controlled by an ill-intentioned person.

The main reason I wouldn't want to use a proxy to play a game is because of the horrible lag you're gonna get.  Sure you're playing on a Japanese server so it's gonna be bad anyways but making it a longer route on a congested proxy server sounds really unfun.
