I've just got a new phone (a MOTO Q9c to be exact).  It seems pretty dumb sometimes.  I've installed the meiryo true type fonts, so I can browse Japanese websites.  But this site doesn't work for me.  The message I get is "Scripting Alert: Unable to attach a handler".  Is it that Pocket IE (which comes with Windows Media 6.1) is just too primative?  Do I need a Java VM?  Will switching to Opera help (I heard it supported Java)?

This sounds like a Javascript warning, the OS of the phone perhaps doesn't fully support Javascript? As for Java there are no Java applets used on the website. The key thing is for reviews it requires "asynchronous requests' aka Ajax or "XmlHttp".

EDIT: Internet Explorer Mobile seems to support Ajax but older versions have limited Javascript support ( http://blogs.msdn.com/iemobile/archive/ … 93200.aspx ). Try to get the most up to date verson of the browser and see if it works better. Wikipedia page says they a new version is coming soon that is equivalent to the desktop IE6.

I've got WM 6.1 with Opera.  It's a MUCH better browser than Pocket IE, and this site (mostly) works on it (Trinity sentences and vocab won't show up on it for some reason...).  The biggest problem with Opera for this site is that it resizes the kanji on the review pages so that it's the same size as all the rest of the fonts on the page.  It makes it so you can't barely see it (which might be good for recognizing kanji on actual websites, because they're not going to be big.)

For this site I'd recommend Skyfire.  It works the best for this site out of all the other mobile browsers I've tried. Plus it's free.

I've got skyfire already, so I'll give that a try.  My phone is new, so I thought I had the most recent version of PIE, but maybe not so.  I may go shopping for Opera though.  Skyfire is not my default browser because I seem to be able to get it into states where it doesn't proceed.  Like, it won't save the username I just typed in, or stuff like that.  It's probably that I'm not used to working with it and doing something "wrong".

Thanks for the advice!!

Ok, so support for Skyfire on Windows Mobile phones has been (or will soon be) discontinued.  So, I'm now using Opera Mini 5.1.  It's o-k-a-y, with only the font size on the review page thin you mentioned.  I can live with that.

It would be a better experience if I didn't need to tap 2 three times to get to the top to see the keyword, then 8 three times to get down to click on the "flip" button, followed by 2 two times to scroll up to check the answer, and then 8 two times to get back down to the "no/yes/easy" buttons.  It was fairly similar in skyfire too, so I should be all used to it.

Can you use the phone keys to activate the keyboard shortcuts? They are Y,N,E, and recently I also added numbers 1,2,3 for y/n/e. Space or zero (numeric keypad) should flip the card.

Other than that if you send me a nice cheque, sure I could spend a week trying to rewrite the review page to scale on small screens. That'll be at least 25 hours of work. I'll need the phone too, so that I can properly test.

If all else fails, I hear there is an "Anki mobile" thing...

ps: let's check the Google Anaglyphics thing-a-matic:

We have % of Site Total visits: 4.76% on resolutions that match criteria "320xsomething".

Out of these the top three are:
* 320x480 : 87,92%
* 320x396 : 10,06 %
* 320x240 : 1,66 % out of 4,76 % of monthly visits.

It's the Motorola Q9c again.  I think it is the implementation of the keyboard on the phone that is at fault.  It cropped up with the search box--to way to "enter" to trigger the search without a button to click on.  The numbers overlay the letters on the left side of the qwerty keypad.  So far as my (limited) experimentation has shown, the only buttons that do anything are 2 (also e), 4, 6 and 8 which are "fast scroll" buttons.  All other uses of any of those other buttons seems not to work on this phone (though the Opera Mini documentation suggests that there are other uses for them).

(sigh)  Maybe I'll wait for a good android phone to be offered by Verizon.
