I'm noticing more and more questions about particular sentences or words or grammar in the general discussion. It may be worth while to create a section for discussion on the language itself (vocabulary, grammar, translations, discussion, etc.).

I could expand the "Japanese Writing System" sub forum to include grammar, vocab,.. eg "The Japanese Language" ("writing, vocab, grammar, sentences...").

I wonder what General Discussion is really about though ;-)   I guess it's "General Discussion about all things Japanese"? How do people see it?

To explain my thoughts, my concern when creating forums and subforums is to avoid making the forum subject too broad. It seems to me that the forum and related community works best when it is focused.

Nuke's idea seems like a reasonable idea.  The sub-forums can be very useful for finding specific types of information that one is looking for.

It is one of the nice things about this forum that we are very much oriented towards a common task.  I imagine that is why the board is overall so civil.

I think what Nuke wants and what I think it would be nice too is a section devoted to RTK. It's becoming confusing sometimes.

That already exists, doesn't it?

Ah, I see. Guess it's kind of tricky. I think that the grammar, vocab can go in the writing system portion of Japanese area. With only 77 topics, Japanese writing sub-forum is not getting much love anyway.

The General discussion has sort of taken broad topics. It lists youtube videos, pronunciation, land mass, train rides, etc. on top of language itself.

Maybe it can be:

Main Forum - Japanese
General (society, observations, culture, etc.),
Learning Resources (web-sites, books, locations, etc.),
Language (writing, grammar, vocabulary, etc.),
Assessment and Jobs (JLPT, College, ALT, etc.)

Seeing that Writing System and JLPT has the fewest posts, it's probably better to expand their functions. This can hone the general, but not by much. Learning Resources seems pretty good as is.

I usually just check the recent topics thing when browsing the forums... I almost never actually go into a specific subforum index unless I am making a new post. Though, I could find it useful to have more subforums if I was looking up general information for fun or interest because I could browse past threads more efficiently. My 2 cents.

Cloud, I normally do that too. However, sometimes I'll scan the sections for posts I may have missed or to look for a post I can't quite remember keywords to find.

It just seemed more and more grammar and translation questions have been popping up, which is odd if placed by the post talking about his TV experience in Japan.

Plus, it gives newcomers to the board a easier way to scan older posts that's relevant to them.

Sometimes I find that people forget General Discussion is actually under Learning Japanese and post threads there that are better suited for the Community section.
The Writing System forum is definitely a deadzone because there is usually a post there maybe once every two weeks about calligraphy pens.
Also I find it odd how in general there has been more and more talk of Chinese in the Learning Japanese forums. While they are occassionally interesting, they are seldomly relevant.
I also just look at recent posts, but I have thought to myself about how the forum could use better organization before.

Hanzi is a planned addition to the site afaik, and Chinese is a natural next step for many learners of Japanese. Therefore it makes sense that there are frequent postings about Chinese on the forums. There should, however, be a dedicated section for it.
