Quick tip for Anki backups:

1. Install dropbox: https://www.getdropbox.com/
2. Move all your Anki decks to the Dropbox directory

Dropbox will do the rest and you will never have to worry bout Anki backups again...

Hmkay, so maybe this wasn't the best idea?

It's kind of uploading non-stop while reviewing...   :\

Edit: Or does it only upload the diffs and not the full file? Then it's fine!

Actually, I don't know. I use Dropbox to backup my media folder, not the actual deck (not every time, at least). I use the Anki synchronisation for that.
How long does it take to do the upload (the little blue ball)? If it's only 1-2 seconds then it's uploading only a small part. I think it's that way, because it says like "72.9 KB changed", while the whole file is 6.4 MB

Okay, it only uploads the diffs. So, yeah! smile  also, I think it only uploads when you close Anki or the editor. Not sure though. Anyway, it works. Good stuff!

Yep, I think they call it "delta syncing", only the differences are transfered.

I don't really want them to have my files, so I'm not a fan of this.

If it just kept references to what files had changed, that would be more my style...   And have my computers directly connect to each other to do the actual transfer.  It eliminates some of the redundancy and usefulness, but nobody else has my files that way.

Encrypt your dropbox folder. Problem solved.

Who cares? It's not like you have nude pictures of yourself in those files tongue

You don't? An entire section of my Anki deck is dedicated to memorizing what I look like naked!

Doesn't Anki already make backups of decks?  What's the difference between using this dropbox method and Anki's backups?

Anki only backups the actual decks, not the media. If you use pictures and sound, those will not show up on other computers.

Using this for the media is fine, but it's a bad idea for the actual decks. The Anki decks should never be copied while they're open, or you risk data corruption.

The user called "resolve" on this forum is the actual creator of Anki (the same who answered your questions on the anki forum), so he's pretty reliable tongue

Is their a way to have an anki deck get it's media from somewhere else than filename.media?
If I keep my media folder in my dropbox, and my anki deck elsewhere, how can I get the media to show on cards?

I'm having exactly the same problem, I kept the media folder inside the Dropbox folder and moved the deck outside Dropbox in order to prevent any corruption. I'm not being able have the media show up in my cards now, which is the piece that's missing for an otherwise perfect Anki/Dropbox match.
Resolve, is there any hope for us? tongue

Doesn't dropbox give you the ability to prevent some files from being synced?
